Good for test prep

This book is very good for test prep for the in-training, or scored, ASA exam. Chapters are broken down in sections that are either by subspecialty or topic-genre. The end-chapter answer sections are a little less than complete for my taste but a good cross-reference text should fill in the gaps just fine.

"Justice and Remembrance" is a tripartite study of the spiritual ethos of Imam 'Ali ibn Abu Talib, who represents the elaboration par excellence of the meanings contained in the Qur'an and enshrined in its application in the precedent set by its Messenger. This task is one of tremendous importance for appropriating the roots of religion and understanding the essential doctrines that constitute Islam as such, apart from an Islam which has pinned to it long complicated histories of sectarian and political interests which is of little concern for those serious seekers of Truth.

The Imam says: 'People are of three types: a lordly knower ('alim rabbani); one who seeks knowledge (muta'allim) for the sake of deliverance; and the common folk (hamaj ra'a) following just anyone, swaying with every current, not desiring to be illuminated by the light of knowledge, nor seeking refuge from any strong support'. One could see the three dimensions of Islam as corresponding to these three categories of people; Ihsan (spiritual virtue) being the way of the lordly knower, Iman (faith) being the way of the seeker, and Islam (submission) the way of the common folk.

The main text under consideration is the Nahj al-Balagha (the Peak of Eloquence), a collection of sermons and doctrinal exposition attributed to Imam 'Ali compiled by Sayyed al-Radi. It is possibly the most important work of classic Arabic literature (the Qur'an, or any Sacred Book, cannot be considered literature) and has been much praised for its unmatched rhetorical style, parables and the eloquence of its expression. The text does have its particularities, but its universal currents are pronounced more strongly, even in the more political sermons. The author Reza Shah-Kazemi focuses his study of the Imam's spiritual ethos on that unmistakable universalism which distinguishes the Imam from those tendencies which reduce Islam to its legal tradition or to sentimental theology. Those particulars have their respective levels of importance, but only in relation to the universal, for Truth is One and simplicity is closer to unity than complexity.

The work is divided into three sections: an introduction to the spiritual ethos of the Imam, a detailed study of the Imam's conception of justice ('adl) as the foundational virtue of Man, and the Imam's teaching concerning the remembrance of God (dhikru 'Llah). Words fall short of describing the profundity of Kazemi's erudition. One is immediately reminded of that intellectual tenor which characterizes those champions of the Sophia Perennis, but it is clear that Kazemi's concern is that universal Truth which is to be gleamed through the prism of the Islamic tradition and not mere speculation on universal principles divorced from their traces in Manifestation. In Imam 'Ali we find the crystallization of this universal Truth which compliments in its inwardness and supra-formal orientation that same Truth found in the Qur'an and its Prophet in its more outward and formal manner. Justice and Remembrance reflect the two functions of the Imam, the former found in his arresting chivalry on the battlefield and his impenetrable integrity in the office of Caliph, and the later in his majestic sanctity and his function of initiating the esoteric tradition within Islam.

The chief aim of this study is clearly to encourage us, through the Ihsani, sapiential, or intellect-ual perspective, to become that "polished mirror" before the Light that is God by assisting us in comprehending the metaphysical infrastructure of the relationship between God and Man and by drawing our attention to the two poles of religious practice: concentration on the Absolute (the remembrance of God) and conformity to the Absolute in the human order (Virtue, or Justice).

In regard to the former Imam 'Ali has said: 'Do not remember God absent mindedly (sahiyan), nor forget Him in distraction; rather, remember Him with perfect remembrance (dhikran kamilan), a remembrance in which your heart and tongue are in harmony, and what you conceal conforms to what you reveal. But you will not remember Him according to the true reality of the remembrance (haqiqat al-dhikr) until you forget your own soul in your remembrance'. In regard to the later Imam 'Ali has written to one of his governors: 'Infuse your heart with mercy for the subjects, love for them and kindness towards them. Be not like a ravenous beast of prey above them, seeking to devour them. For they are of two types: either your brother in religion or your like in creation, Mistakes slip from them, defects emerge from them, deliberately or accidentally. So bestow upon them your forgiveness and pardon, just as you would have God bestow upon you His forgiveness and pardon; for you are above them, and the one who has authority over you is above you, and God is above him who appointed you ... and through them He tests you', and 'Let your most beloved treasure be the treasure of virtuous acts. Dominate your inclinations, and exercise self-restraint in the face of that which is unlawful for you--for indeed self-restraint engenders within the soul a proper balance as regards what it likes and what it dislikes.'

One could understand the scope of this work by seeing it as an extensive introduction to the Ihsani tradition or quintessential Islam through the sermons and maxims of Imam 'Ali. Kazemi shows us how the Imam's use of paradoxical pronouncement on the ultimate nature of the Real and our relationship with this Real on all the various levels of the hierarchy that is Man activates the Intellect ('aql)--referred to by the Imam as a "buried treasure", much like the hadith qudsi where God refers to Himself as a "hidden treasure" Who "longed to be known"--and ushers us towards the realization of Tawhid in its highest sense. This Ihsani tradition is the understanding and appropriation of Revelation through the Intellect, which is its microcosmic compliment, and includes the various sacred sciences which return us from our natural heedlessness and baseness to our supra-natural sanctity and perfection. As the Imam says, 'The prophet of a man is the interpreter of his intellect (rasul al-rajul tarjuman `aqlihi)', and 'He attains deliverance whose intellect dominates his caprice'.

If one is seeking to understand the Real through Its self-disclosure in that rich tradition which is Islam I can think of no better place to start than a patient and contemplative study of this most precious work. It is as if the warrior sage himself has been resurrected in the humble writings and reflections of Reza Shah-Kazemi; something the author himself would undoubtedly deny, but which for this reader cannot but be the case. This is also a work which pushes the reader beyond its covers, as books can only be supports for spiritual practice and can never take their place. Theoretical or conceptual understanding is naught in the light of that universal Truth which the Imam defines thus: 'Al-Haqiqa (unconditioned Truth) is the unveiling of the splendors of Majesty, without any allusion ... the effacement of that which is erroneously imagined (al-mawhum), together with the clarity of that which is truly known (al-ma'lum) ... the attraction of the absolute unicity of the quality of Tawhid ... a light dawning from the morn of eternity, its traces shimmering on the temples of Tawhid'.

Although this book is not an easy read it is well worth the effort. It explains the Shia concept of justice ( putting everything in its proper place) by reviewing a letter written by Imam Ali to his deputy in Egypt.
This section should be required reading for everyone in a leadership position.
I have yet to read the section on Remebrance( calling God to mind) but I am sure it will be equally uplifting.

Even as the New Kittredge Shakespeare series glances back to George Lyman Kittredge's student editions of the plays, it is very much of our current moment: the slim editions are targeted largely at high school and first-year college students who are more versed in visual than in print culture. Not only are the texts of the plays accompanied by photographs or stills from various stage and cinema performances: the editorial contributions are performance-oriented, offering surveys of contemporary film interpretations, essays on the plays as performance pieces, and an annotated filmography. Traditional editorial issues (competing versions of the text, cruxes, editorial emendation history) are for the most part excluded; the editions focus instead on clarifying the text with an eye to performing it. There is no disputing the pedagogic usefulness of the New Kittredge Shakespeare's performance-oriented approach. At times, however, it can run the risk of treating textual issues as impediments, rather than partners, to issues of performance. This is particularly the case with a textually vexed play such as Pericles: Prince of Tyre. In the introduction to the latter, Jeffrey Kahan notes the frequent unintelligibility of the play as originally published: "the chances of a reconstructed text matching what Shakespeare actually wrote are about 'nil'" (p. xiii) But his solution — to use a "traditional text" rather than one corrected as are the Oxford and Norton Pericles — obscures how this "traditional text," including its act and scene division, is itself a palimpsest produced through three centuries of editorial intervention. Nevertheless, the series does a service to its target audience with its emphasis on performance and dramaturgy. Kahan's own essay about his experiences as dramaturge for a college production of Pericles is very good indeed, particularly on the play's inability to purge the trace of incestuous desire that Pericles first encounters in Antioch. Other plays' cinematic histories: Annalisa Castaldo's edition of Henry V contrasts Laurence Oliver's and Branagh's film productions; Samuel Crowl's and James Wells's edition of (respectively) I and 2 Henry IV concentrate on Welle's Chimes at Midnight and Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho; Patricia Lennox's edition of As You Like It offers an overview of four Hollywood and British film adaptations; and John R. Ford's edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream provides a spirited survey of the play's rich film history.

The differences between, and comparative merits of, various editorial series are suggested by the three editions of The Taming of the Shrew published this year. Laury Magnus's New Kittredge Shakespeare edition is, like the other New Kittredge volumes, a workable text for high school and first year college students interested in film and theater. Great for teaching Shakespeare to middle school

I'm teaching his graphic novel version of A Midsummer Night's Dream to my 7th grade English class in rural New York. For most of them, it is their first experience with Shakespeare. I wanted to give them a graphic novel (with the original Shakespearean text) because I wanted to familiarize them with the difficult language, knowing they would experience it throughout their high school life. I chose the graphic novel so they would be able to understand the gist, even if they couldn't understand each individual word. For the most part, we read the play aloud, but the kids are able to understand what's going on. As well, I would say about 1/2 to 3/4 of my students genuinely like it. For Shakespeare, in Middle School, those are actually pretty awesome odds. The others are either disinterested by everything (because they're 12) or don't have a clue what's going on because the language is so difficult. We work a lot to meet each kid where they are, and this graphic novel really helps with that.

One of his very best!

How do you review Shakespeare? He's the greatest writer in the English language so I can't give him high enough praise. This particular play is one of the best of the best. It's funny, witty, romantic, smart, colorful and readable. For anyone not comfortable with Shakespeare, Midsummer Night's Dream would be a great place to start. The Pelican edition is light and easy to carry. It has the line numbers which are necessary if you are reading or studying it with a class or a group. The font size is makes it easy to read. These editions are what I use to teach Shakespeare because they are more comfortable for students than having them buy a larger, complete version.

"Reason and love keep little company together nowadays."

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of Shakespeare’s most produced plays, but it also has the distinction of being quite good. This play exudes in the joys to be had in romping through the realms that we can never truly understand or explain. Realms like love, our dreams, fantasy, etc. It is a funny and clever play, and Shakespeare gives the reader a master class in interweaving three separate plotlines in a manner that is nicely and appropriately done.
There are many joys to be had in reading (and seeing) “Midsummer”, but unique to reading the play here are just a few reasons why it is worth your attention. First, the introduction by Russ McDonald (Pelican Shakespeare edition) has some really good insights that I have not come across elsewhere. It is well done. As for the play itself, it yields countless joys, among them Act 2:1 where the leaders of the fairy fantastical world (Oberon and his queen Titania) have an epic quarrel. The scene boast some of the loveliest poetry in all of Shakespeare. The imagery is astoundingly fantastic. “Midsummer” actually contains some of the best poetry in the Shakespearean canon period, especially in the characters of Oberon- the King of the fairies, and Duke Theseus. In the hands of talented actors they have moments in the play that are mesmerizing. Act 5 of “Midsummer” is also one of the most pleasing and funny in all of Shakespeare. All of the loose plot lines are tied up; it has gut busting humor, and again that lovely poetry. As one of Shakespeare’s few original plotlines and a play where fantasy and harmony are emphasized, I imagine that the self-justification of art and artists was sometimes in his head as he wrote it. One of the truly remarkable plays of all time.
As for the Pelican Shakespeare series, they are my favorite editions as the scholarly research is usually top notch and the editions themselves look good as an aesthetic unit. It looks and feels like a play and this compliments the text's contents admirably. The Pelican series was recently reedited and has the latest scholarship on Shakespeare and his time period. Well priced and well worth it.

Great Book

This book is one of the best golf books I have read. Count Yogi teaches a mental routine that will have you hitting great golf shots in no time at all. Count Yogi himself was a very good golfer and worked with many other famous golfers of that era (Austin, Zaharias). If you are a student of the golf swing I would recommend you buy all of Count Yogi's books and follow his "Infallible Mental Routine", I think you will be happy with the results. There are also many nuggets of information for putting and small strokes that are useful and after reading his books I am playing the best golf shots of my life. I only wish I would have discovered Count Yogi about thirty years ago.

Healthy, injury free golf swing. No need for gimmicks: range finders, because I am learning the "infallible Mental routine. The ball goes straighter and farther, with a graceful relaxed swing. I recommend this book for casual and pro golfers. It is fun easy and leaves you with no hangover.

About the Author
Harry W. McLean is currently employed as a Reliability Engineering Manager at AT&T Wireless Services in Redmond, Washington. He has completed, throughout his career, over 150 HALTs in Medical, Avionics, Telecom, Automotive, Storage Devices and Information Technology equipment throughout North and South America. Hewlett-Packard employed Harry for twenty-five years, and during his career he held various positions in production, research and development, and quality and reliability engineering. While at HP he helped the company move beyond the use of traditional environmental and qualification methods to HALT and HASS, and designed and implemented the HASA process that is included in this book. Following his time with HP McLean was employed with QualMark where he consulted with many companies in the successful application of HALT and HASS, was the project research and development manager, and also taught HALT and HASS seminars. McLean received his electrical engineering degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

Best book on the subject so far

In this book Harry goes into hands on detail and doesn't just reiterate the theory. His explanations are complete and his guidelines are short and easy to follow. I especially found interest in his use of sigma values to determine the levels of energy a product MUST be able to endure, this gives us an educated guess into when you should fix a weekness without question and when you should take into acount cost and technology factors.
Purchasing this book is easier then compiling a library of published papers on the subject. It is worth the purchase price if you are working in the industry.

An excellent book on the subject

Being new to the subject and the first book I've read on HALT testing, I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know what HALT, HASS and HASA testing is all about, how they relate to one another and the advantages of having these tests done on a product. This book isn't going to hold your hand and help you set up a HALT testing program. The book will explain what types of equipment are involved and gives suggestions as to how to perform these types of tests and who should be involved. I've seen one other book on the subject and it's thicker and more theoretical with many formulas and such. It's a big turn off and very dry reading. This book is completely the opposite. Very practical knowledge explained in easy to understand language, as if a co-worker who's an expert on the subject is explaining the whole process to you.

HALT, HASS, and HASA is a great book. I've been using it as my HALT and HASS bible since the first edition. Harry explains the HASA methodology in an easy to use, step by step process. He also provides numerous case studies and examples to better explain the points. Best book on the subjects. This book is a must for anyone that will be practicing either HALT or HASS or HASA.

About the Author

GEORGE G. KARADY received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 1960. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 1996. He is currently the Chair Professor for the Salt River Project at Arizona State University.

KEITH E. HOLBERT earned his PhD in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee. He is presently the Director of the Nuclear Power Generation program in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. He is a registered professional engineer and a senior member of the IEEE.

Text Questions need revision

Answers on the back are incorrect, and chapter does not prepare student for the nature of questions asked by the text. Additionally, parameters are not clearly described. Good pictures and great explanations though!

Giving it only 3 stars because this book does not provide step-by-step instructions on energy conversions. To be clear this book is great if you want to do computer-based energy conversions using mathcad or matlab. It says so in the back of book. I just wish that my teacher had read that before choosing this book for this course since we are not using either of the mentioned software to do the energy conversions.

In short, get this book if you want to learn how to do computer-based energy conversions and avoid getting this book if you want to learn how to do it by hand. That is unless you are forced to buy it for a class.
