Syl Mortilla authoring a biography on the life, works and soul of the icon Michael Jackson has been eagerly anticipated by the fan community since the inception of his popular blog in 2013. Mortilla’s unique insights on Michael Jackson led to his writings being endorsed by longtime friends of the man himself – with Karen Faye, Michael’s make-up artist and confidante of thirty years providing the foreword to the book, and Michael’s official photographer Harrison Funk providing the cover image. The book is further advocated by fellow esteemed Michael Jackson bloggers Damien Shields and Charlie Thomson. The onus of this distinctive biography is on the utilisation of Michael Jackson’s art as a window to an understanding of the man largely considered an enigma. The book explores Michael’s evolution from pop star to global figure, with Mortilla questioning whether the people of planet Earth can afford to dismiss the totemic value of Michael Jackson’s unrivalled fame and legacy apropos its potential as an opportunity for promoting world peace. A percentage of proceeds from the book are being donated to the registered not-for-profit charity, Michael Jackson’s Legacy. “Syl Mortilla has a remarkable and uncanny understanding of Michael Jackson that I do not see in any other… his writing is the blood pulsing from Michael's heart to all of his fans… Michael's life spoke, and Syl Mortilla was listening.” – Karen Faye “Syl Mortilla's work is like a tapestry of truth; an assortment of facts, quotes and insights plucked from the depths of Michael Jackson's extensive body of work, carefully woven together with poetically articulated observations and interpretations of that work that'll make you look at, listen to, or think about it in a whole new light." – Damien Shields “Syl Mortilla is a fantastic wordsmith with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Michael Jackson… a sensitive and sympathetic writer with a truly unique voice.” – Charles Thomson

A Stirring and Profound Work
By Iain Cooper
Finally, an eloquently written, intelligent, empathetic, astute and yet pragmatic analysis of a man so much adored and maligned. It tells the story of a misunderstood, persecuted victim of a cut throat business, a shameless media and a deceived but baying public. How an innocent man of immeasurable talent and success came to be crucified in life and death at the altar of advertising space. An impressive read indeed.

A wonderful human being
By flyaway
Finally a book that not only contains correct informations for those unfamiliar with Michael Jackson life and work, but a real journey among the most important historal events of the 80/90 with insignful points of view. Food for thought on what Michael represented during his passage on our planet: A wonderful human being. A book written from the heart dedicated to someone who had a heart bigger than his own life. Highly recommended!

When we see someone in a different way or a new light is shined upon them we have our minds opened up to new possibilities within the human condition. To paraphrase Tim Minchin, there's a defense of the fence we should consider. We make up our minds so quickly about people's character and who they are, 'good' or 'bad', when there is so much to discover about how black and white can be two sides of the same coin (in this case quite literally, although "it don't matter"). It's really incredible when you stop to think about how a poor black boy growing up with eleven other people in a small house in Gary Indiana would grow up to be the most recognizable individual on the face of the planet. Is it any wonder the most enigmatic man to ever walk the earth would be a figure of such controversy? Man & woman, black & white, adult & child, all seemingly opposites become one and the same with the man who moved backwards while walking forwards. I'm a big fan of characters- people who are larger than life. I'm not talking about a person like Justin Beieber who if it wasn't for Usher's business sense, a mass marketing machine behind him, and autotune, would be decent at karaoke on a good day (listen to him sing a cappella on Ellen. Good god, if that was his manager's idea I'm shocked he wasn't fired). When we used to talk about greatness we would talk about a kind of person who carefully studied Astaire, Kelly, & Brown, worked his way through seedy nightclubs, became a professional at age 12, shattered the color lines on MTV, and became the greatest song and dance man of all time. You can trace the rise and fall of the music video, as MJ called them "short films", to Michael's appearances on the scene. I have always wondered how he thought about things and viewed the world. What I had not wondered as much about is how he made others think about things and how he influenced others to see the world. I really see Michael Jackson the person in a different way after reading this book from one of my favorite writers. I think it is worth it to stop and take a look at the enigmatic ones we are lucky enough to share time on earth with, and how they have influenced pop culture, society, and in the case of Michael Jackson, undoubtedly the entire globe from Sri Lanka to the U.K. and back again. I believe it is through thoughtful books like this that a whole new understanding of history's greatest people can be attained, even for those of us who think we know them well. In many ways I feel Michael's life was tragic (he learned what happens when you let pirates into Neverland), but a bright light will always continue to shine out of those who learned how to, perhaps unconventionally, 'do life' through him. The reasons why are fascinating, individually unique, and help others see heroes in a completely new way. That is what I love most about this book. This was a book written by a fan that reaches beyond the interest of other fans out to those who want to discover how the greatest truly do leave a lasting mark on the world through all those they have inspired. Check it out.
