Another Dukes of War Hit!

Sarah Fairfax’s heart & soul died the day her fianc� was killed on the battlefield at Waterloo. Until she learned their one night together left her with child – then a small piece of her bloomed knowing she would have a little piece of Edmund always with her. The only problem – she was unmarried and with child = social ruin. Until the day Phillip, the Duke of Ravenwood (one of Edmund’s best friends) offers to marry Sarah to provide a future for her & her child. A mere weeks from delivery, Sarah agrees to marry Phillip for the sake of her unborn child. The day of the wedding will change Sarah’s life in ways she never expected.
Edmund Blackpool’s last thought was he was going to die without having married the love of his life. When he wakes up in a Flemish convent his constant thought is Sarah. Those thoughts push Edmund to heal so he can go home. Imagine his surprise when he arrives back in England to find Sarah is about to marry one of his best friends.
What follows is wonderful tale of how two people try to make their way back to each other. You’ll cry for everything Edmund went through, admire Sarah’s strength when it comes to her baby, all the while wanting to smack their heads together so they’ll communicate. Although written with emotion, Erica Ridley throws in lots of humor (the baby scenes are particularly funny).
A series book that can be read as a stand-alone but don’t deny yourself the pleasure all of Ms. Ridley’s Dukes of War stories! I’m (im)patiently waiting for the next!!!!

Once again it's a triumph for Ms. Ridley.

Welcome back to the Dukes of War, once again Erica Ridley shares with us the ravages of war, the aftermath. This time in more than just how those who went into battle deal with it. No, this time she deals with those left behind.
She tells about life long friends who have all suffered the consequences. One was forced to stay behind and manage his affairs but watched as his friends left boys and came back men with troubles and struggles they have to overcome. One went away a dashing heir and returned and impoverished Earl (The Earl's Defiant Wallflower), One left all daring and dashing and came home lost in his mind with a severe case of PTSD not that anyone knew it by that name at the time (The Captain's Bluestocking Mistress). Two left darlings of the ton, twins, halves of one whole but only one came home (The Major's Faux Fiancee) but just when all hope is lost, the brother thought lost to war comes back.. obviously he's not dead.. but more than a little broken and what he comes home to? Well that's enough to destroy anyone.
Miss Sarah Fairfax loved one man and loved him dearly. So dearly that she's now expecting his child, any day now. Only he's been declared dead and she has no way of protecting this baby. So when his one remaining bachelor friend offers marriage, Sarah accepts, how can she not? It will protect her child, give him or her a name and leave them with a legacy. She's willing to make things work, if only the great love of her life hadn't died...
Brigadier Edmund Blackpool is back from the dead and ready to reclaim his life. He can't wait to begin again and put it all behind him only his fiance, the woman who owns his heart is getting married, right now.. he has to stop this fiasco and set right their lives. It should be simple enough but Edmund is not an easy man, his scars go way past the surface and he's no longer sure of who and what he is. To top it off, the jealousy of seeing Sarah almost marrying one of his best friends sends him off a deep end. There's no end to the suffering and Edmund has to deal with it all.
Ok, this was not the easiest to read. Edmund was not lovable he was a wounded war veteran and we all know the struggles they have. The unseen demons they have to chase. Erica writes this wonderfully. It's about finding a love you thought was lost but more than that it's about becoming.
Edmund has to deal with day to day life and each success is much more of a mountain than a molehill... Once again it's a triumph for Ms. Ridley.

Regency England beyond the glitz and glamour and still a remarkable HEA

In this fifth book in the Dukes of War series, Sarah and Edmund (twin of Bartholomew) are reunited after all friends and family thought he had died at Waterloo. The immediate marriage upon his return did not immediately bring his world into order as he had dreamt. There was so much noise and chaos in London; and his wife barely acknowledged him instead attending ceaselessly to their newborn twin sons. This book focuses on Edmund and Sarah finding their way back to each other and Edmund recovering in his own way from war. Nice touches about the true effect of war on those who fight and the true effect on those left behind. Even with this serious undertone, the novel was entertaining and uplifting and totally satisfying.
