About the Author
Lee Smith is a Registered Master Plumber and certified vocational math instructor. His many years of practical and teaching experience in the pipe trades includes domestic and industrial work in the areas of refrigeration and air conditioning, deep sea diving vehicles, and nuclear piping. In addition to several certificates in the trades, Mr. Smith has held Master Plumber credentials for forty years. He earned his A.A.in applied science and technology from Thomas A. Edison State College, and his B.A. and M.A. degrees in education from Temple University.

Simple and Precise

This is exactly what I hoped it would be. A beautiful book full of scans of the original writings of Ian Curtis. For that it is absolutely perfect.

The first half of the book is filled with song lyrics. The scans are to the left and the lyrics we all know are printed out to the right. Much like a bilingual book.

The second half of the book--the appendices--I find even more exciting. This section features alternative versions of songs; prose; things that would have been songs; letters; and Joy Division art (meaning gig posters and the like). I wasn't expecting all of that and it is a real treat. It's an insight in to what was and what would have been.

If you look to Ian Curtis as a poet, this is a really wonderful purchase to make. It's the definitive un-edited, non-paraphrased, original collection of his work. As he wrote it.

Great for the researcher.

An outstanding collection of original documents for the serious Joy Division / Ian Curtis fan or researcher. Definitely not for the average bear as this is a collection of his writings without commentary, except for the introduction. I bought the book as I am researching Curtis' creative process and it is perfect for that purpose.

Great Review for the Shelf

This is an excellent review of all the material you need for the NBME psych shelf exam. It is also great for step 2 as well. I would say that the book is on the lengthy side, but it can be helpful if you are reading throughout your rotation. What it doesn't include are several of the genetic issues like Prader-Willi syndrome and the peripartum effects of some drugs like alcohol or phenytoin. I would make sure to review those on the exam. This also lacks extensive detail on drug toxicities and withdrawal effects. I would look into other resources for that as well. Overall, I highly recommend this book to review for the shelf. It seems that every med student was using this as their source.

A Too-Brief History of Flattery

What can I say about Richard Stengel's book that this smart -- no, incandescent -- writer couldn't say better himself? And, while we're at it, wait'll you see how great he looks in the dust jacket photo! Like the lipstick-smeared derriere on the front cover, Stengel's book comes in two parts: first is a history of flattery. It moves from the Bible, which suddenly makes sense through Stengel's lens ("God begins to preach compassion and justice, and in order to flatter him, God's followers make those virtues the hallmark of three great religions"), through ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance -- all hotbeds of flattery -- before crossing the Atlantic, where Stengel's analysis is particularly astute. (He writes: "Flattery in America was seen as unmanly. You can't flatter the Marlboro Man, and he won't flatter you.") A Princeton-educated journalist (now managing editor of Time.com), Stengel surveys flattery in Hollywood, in Washington, and among the media elite (Sam Donaldson's obsequious letter to his journalistic quarry is a gem). Then Stengel switches from history to how-to, dispensing the kind of advice that makes the book seem cheap (and probably a tax deductible business expense to boot): Avoid seeming like you want something [who needs a job at Time.com, anyway?]; avoid giving the same kind of compliment to more than one person [but what will I tell Jay McInerny?]; be cool or neutral at the beginning and grow warmer and more complimentary over time [be honest -- do you think I mentioned the jacket photo too early?]. If there's one thing wrong with Stengel's history of flattery, it's that it's only 315 and 3/4 pages. It should have been 316 -- at least.

Flippancy and Flattery

This book makes some good points and includes some interesting perspectives on flattery and grovelling. At the same time, it is decidedly "popular" rather than scholarly. The most irritating aspect of the book is the author's breezy flippancy; he tries much too hard to be much too clever, and the result is merely tiresome. I wish I could have checked this out of the library for a few days instead of buying it. For those with a serious interest in the subject, Alfons Silbermann's "Grovelling and Other Vices" is clearly superior.

Wry Panoramic Look of the Social Roles of Flattery

Without intending to be too kind, the question this book really raises is who should read it. Some will love it while others will hate it. What will be your reaction?
Flattery is one of those subjects that most people cannot and do not want to take seriously. If you like a little humor with your social commentaries, you will enjoy this book.
If you want a how-to book on being a more successful flatterer, you will find some helpful hints towards the end of the book. But you will feel unrewarded by the histories of flattery, beginning with studies of chimpanzee behavior.
If you want to learn how to defend yourself against flattery's corrupting influences, there are useful ideas here and there. But you will probably still feel vulnerable in this regard ( . . . at least until someone praises you for avoiding being taken in by flattery . . . assuming the praise is genuine, and not just flattery).
If you want a guide for how to praise, rather than flatter, you will find some ideas here. But that's also not the book's purpose. You belong elsewhere to serve your purpose.
If you take a very reverent attitude towards the Old Testament, you may be offended by what the author has to say about God in that context. You should skip at least that chapter or perhaps the entire book. If you are an agnostic or an atheist, you should probably start there in chapter three.
If you have read widely on flattery (animal experiments about how "alpha" males are created, Machiavelli, Castiglione, Franklin, Bacon, Dale Carnegie, Chesterfield, and troubadour verse), you will find little new in this book except for the quips. Now, the quips are quite good, so you may like the book anyway. But be aware that about eighty percent of the book is providing such historical perspectives.
On the other hand, if you want to add to your repertoire of cocktail party stories, this book is excellent. You get humorous glimpses into the foibles and virtues of those who wrote about flattery, as well as their writing. Mr. Stengel is a witty story teller, who makes it all much more interesting than it really is. For example, anyone who likes Dale Carnegie books or courses should read about Mr. Carnegie's background as an unpopular young person and ineffective salesman.
There are many legitimate ways to attract attention from people that are different from flattery (in the sense of "false praise"). For example, you can simply be very attentive because you respect all other people. You can tell funny stories because you like to amuse. You can help people accomplish things they care about, because you like to make life better for others.
Whatever you do, be sure that you choose how you want to be sociable, however, rather than simply falling into the habits of flattery without thinking about what you are doing. The unconscious desire to please may take you along paths you don't really want to trod.
Have true friends and a meaningful life!

This book was recommended by my local bee association, and I can see why. The book has everything a beginner would need to know. Great pictures, very descriptive. Anyone looking to get started in beekeeping should read this book.

Really good source for a beginner

This book (the 2015 edition) is very informative for the new or aspiring beekeeper. (that would be me) I attended several all day workshops locally on beekeeping and both instructors highly recommended this book. Both are beekeepers with over 50 hives each. As to some of the negative comments, both instructors and several local beekeepers warmed me that beekeepers can be very opinionated as to the one and only true and righteous way to keep bees. (their particular way of course is the way) That seems to be the thread in some of the negative comments here. My suggestion is to use this as one more source of information to make your informed decisions.

Ordered 4 books, I finished this one first

Really good basic, but through intro book about beekeeping. I wasn't expecting much from a "for dummies" book but I'm happily eating my words.

I'm researching everything I need to know about starting and caring for a hive for work. We run an organic farm and I ordered this and 3 other beekeeping books. I started with The Backyard Beekeeper, but left it at home so cracked this one the other day at work. It's so easy to read and written in a way that makes me want to keep reading. I finished it in less than 24hours. I feel like I have a good foundation to jump from, and the other books will be easier to read now that I'm familiar with the subject.

Information is presented clearly. Standard practice as well as the author's personal suggestions, but always reminding the reader that learning the traditional methods is important yet we'll develop our own styles as time goes on. Pick what works best for us.

What follows is a series of harrowing near-misses as Elly studies and learns the secrets of The Orffyreus Project, where free energy might be a very real possibility, and her grandmother's dream of bringing the perpetual motion wheel into production and wide-spread use for the good of mankind seems very possible, and Maxwell Black does everything in his considerable power to stop her, to steal the technology, and to see that the interests of the Petroleum industry are protected from the imminent disaster of obsolescence.

Interesting Page Turner

Although I'm still not sure I am pronouncing Orffyreus correctly, I still have to give a positive review. I thought the book was very well written, suspenseful and interesting. I actually found myself using Google to find out more about this Orffyreus Wheel and Mr. Bessler. David Niall Wilson is creative and keeps the reader engrossed.

The premise of the book is that Bessler (who renamed himself Orffyreus) invented a wheel of perpetual motion in the 18th century that everyone has assumed was destroyed, except it wasn't. Fast forward to present time and Elly Kassel has inherited the secrets of the wheel. Only others want it as well. What follows is a nail biting cat and mouse game.

The book started off with a bang. From page one the book is intense and filled with suspense. I was definitely eager to see what happened next. I really enjoyed the parallel storylines of past and present, showing the stories of Bessler and Elly respectively. In the present time, there is an intense race against the clock while in the past we see the inventor's discovery come to fruition through various trials and tribulations. I can say that I was interested by both stories. I wasn't bored by one and anxious to skip ahead to the other.

My only critique is that I found the good guys a little too good. They were too saintly. I don't want to get more specific because I don't want to spoil anything. I also thought it slowed down a bit at the end after starting off with such a bang. This didn't bother me but I think it's important for readers to know.

I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more by David Nial Wilson.

The tale that spins on relentlessly

With the Orffyreus Wheel, David combines the same effortless pace of a good tale as he does with Ancient Eyes, but also manages to interweave two distinct stories - both of which share the same breathless excitement and wonder of their central characters.

The first thread of the story sees Elly inherit her Grandmother's estate - which turns out to be an enormous operation, bristling with scientists, security and secret locations, harnessing the secrets of Johann Bessler's Perpetual Motion device towards cheaper energy and more efficient machines. She is helped along by a collection of enthusiastic and well created characters who Elly now finds working for her.

Elly is quickly drawn into the ongoing quest to create limitless energy, and a battle with those who would see such a device never exist - including the ruthless and, as the book progresses, increasingly insane, Maxwell Black, and his cronies.
With a dose of violent encounters, a spot of kidnapping, plenty of subterfuge and the struggle of Elly's morals over the practicalities of the power of the device, the story buzzes along enjoyably.

Interspersed - when Elly finds a quiet spot to read her Grandmother's journals - is the history of Bessler through his notes and findings, from his jobbing work as a physician through to the fruition of his life's work to finally set up a building where he could build and show off his Perpetuum Mobile to the world. What follows thereafter is as inevitable as it is depressing.

The skill with this second tale is in its colourful 18th Century descriptions, attitudes and character roles, as well as the stark difference between Bessler's fervent belief in the science-shattering power in his invention and the disdain with which other men of power view his work.

A really good story, that compares well to his other works, and a real bargain at this price on the Kindle.

If you like things like "Angels & Demons" read this.

Really, this is as good as any of them. Good story, written well. It makes the premise believable. I would have given it 5 stars but I thought the way the original story in the story was handled could have been done differently. Just my opinion.
Definitely worth reading.
