too superficial to be useful

This book aims at a good target: explaining EAI to managers. To accomplish this task, the author needed full descriptions of the concepts and meaty examples to illustrate them. This book has neither.
For example, the author states several times that SAP needs a richer collection of APIs in order to connect to other application. Nowhere does he describe what is missing: what functionality is hard to access in SAP that should be easy?
Save your money.

Excellent Book for Building an EAI Business or Tactical Plan

I am in the unenviable position of building EAI Business and Tactical Plans for a company that doesn't really understand why they need an EAI middleware infrastructure. This book was a fantastic resource for putting together a non-technical "30,000 foot view" of the needs, options and pitfalls of EAI middleware for presentation to upper management. As someone else pointed out, this book will not provide detailed implementation techniques or examples for any particular product or technology approach. What this book does deliver is a high-level understanding of how each of the predominant technologies fit into the various types of middleware, as well as what the pros and cons you can expect.

Disappointing - what but not how, when, where

A disappointing book that addresses the "what with" but not the when, where and how of EAI. Early chapters are weak. The later ones usefully overview the possible integration levels (database, method level, user interface, etc.), what the tools and aproaches do, and their relative strengths and weaknesses. Very few examples are used and there are no case studies. There are no guidelines or framework of how to plan and select the best EAI approach. Occasionally obscure terms and concepts are used without explanation and the content is never related to a real project situation. The addition of guidelines, EAI selection criteria, real case studies and of short, pithy product reviews would help considerably.

I would recommend these different books for different types of studying

I bought this book along with the Barron's Review book to assist me in studying for the rather rigorous AP World exam. After successfully completing the course and exam, I would recommend these different books for different types of studying. The Princeton Review is much better used as a review rather than a fact-packed supplemental guide (as I believe Barron's is). Also, this book contains lots of test taking strategies, and how to actually write the 3 types of essays we are required to know how to compose (something I was NOT taught in class!). This portion of the book is much more in depth than the Barron's Review. Overall though, if you're looking for a comprehensive review, go with Barron's; if you just need to refresh major ideas, I highly recommend this one. Either way, these books will help you if you're trying to get a 4 or 5 on the exam!

Book says 2016 edition, but it is NOT current. Be careful. The description of the DBQ essay is incorrect. They slapped a new cover on an old-test book. I think this is called misrepresentation, or fraud.

Great edition study guide for the APUSH exam in comparison to Barrons

For those of you attempting to decide between the Princeton Review and Barrons editions for any AP study guides, I would definitely recommend the Princeton Review because it covers the important topics without being an overload of information like Barrons. Barrons is admittedly more complex, but for the student looking for a study guide to pass the exam with top marks rather than learning a bunch of overkill information, Princeton Review does the trick. Plus, because it's more manageable due to having less unnecessary information, the Princeton Review copy is easily managed in one whole night of cramming for a somewhat prepared student, as opposed to Barrons.

This book is perfect for a student who hasn't really paid attention all year in class. It worked for me, and helped me ace the test without too much effort, as long as you read the entire study guide from cover to cover and memorize it all.

Family, Love, and God's Plan

It's Christmas. The Sanders clan is gathering in Hope Springs. The festivities are dampened by the sudden death of Pastor Jim Dillon. He and Grandma Geri, matriarch of the clan, have lived next door to each other for many years so both families are caught up in the funeral preparations. The two families, one, the Dillons, white, the Sanders, black, are very supportive of each other in an atmosphere where whites and black tend to keep to themselves.

People from both families arrive with issues. Todd Dillon and is wife Becca, are mourning his father, but she is also caught up in the excitement of her expanding ministry. Stephanie Sanders arrives unwilling to spend Christmas getting to know this branch of her family. She doesn't want to serve, but perhaps the is God's plan for her. Janelle and her children arrive still mourning the death of her husband, David. These and many other characters from the family and the little town of Hope Springs make this a delightful book.

The message is strongly Christian. The characters all at some point seriously pray to God to guide them in finding the plan for their lives. I found the coupling of the strong Christian message with the modern characters, each with issues, very satisfying.

I highly recommend this book. The characters are appealing; the plot, full of romantic twists, and the emphasis on God's plan for our lives, instructive.

Great addition to the series

I've read the other books in the series and thus was familiar with many of the characters and reading this book "Hope Springs" reaffirmed my love for author Kim Cash Tate.

In this book, a relatively recently widowed Janelle goes 'home' to spend time with her grandmother who is seriously ill. Because life back home is filled with sadness and memories of her late husband, she decides to uproot her kids and spend some time taking care of her grandmother. She encounters her first love whose wife has left him as a single father and old feelings are soon at the surface...

Janelle's cousin Stephanie, who has a history of selfishness from the prior two novels, is feeling the prompting of God to also assist with their grandmother, her husband will be away on a medical mission for weeks and she asked to me made more of a servant, so how can she say no...

Finally, Becca is the wife of the grandmother's neighbor's son. When her father-in-law who was the pastor of the local church passes away suddenly, Becca's husband feels call to move from St. Louis to the small town of Hope Springs to pastor his late father's church. Becca is torn as her career as an inspirational speaker and author is just taking off and Hope Springs is not what she saw as a home base.

This novel tells the stories of these three women, who have separate and overlapping stories of their struggles to move forward in the paths that God has laid forth. The characters, as always for author Kim Cash Tate, are well developed, engaging and the stories are great from start to finish.

I savored each and every page and am again eagerly awaiting the next story from this gifted author.

Engaging Christian Fiction

Janelle Evans lost her husband and she also pulled away from her relationship with God. When she and her children visit Hope Springs for a family reunion, she finds a reason to stay longer than she'd intended. Will the time she spends with family and an old friend help her to live again?

Becca Anderson is finally living her dream. She has been invited to speak at The National Christian Women's Conference, and maybe even greater things will follow. Her husband has been called to Pastor his late father's church in Hope Springs, which means relocation to a small town. How will the move affect her dream, her marriage, and her walk with the Lord?

Stephanie London is happily married and living in St. Louis. A visit to Hope Springs reunites her with family she hasn't seen in years, and it also teaches her a few things about herself.

The first thing I thought as I began to read was that it would have been nice if this book had not been released until December or maybe even November, around Thanksgiving. Since it's Christmas when the story begins, reading it during the Christmas season would have made for a even cozier reading experience. Yes, I could have waited, but I had read Faithful, and I was reading Cherished when I bought Hope Springs, so - since I really enjoyed the first two books - I was eager to read more of Tate's work.

Predominately white churches, predominately black churches - Tate brings attention to the division among believers, teaching a lesson Christians will benefit from. There are also messages about how harmful family secrets can be, putting someone's needs before your own, learning how to hear from God, family unity and forgiveness.

Some of Tate's fictional characters from Faithful and Cherished are in this book, but the story mostly revolves around new characters. There are quite a few of them to keep track of - I had to go back a few sentences every now and then to make sure I had things straight, but Hope Springs was as inspirational, engaging and thought-provoking as Tate's previous novels.

A qualified "thumbs up"

This is a tough call, but on the whole I am giving this novel 4 stars because it successfully held my attention, got me engaged in trying to understand the characters' motives and is beautifully written. Having said that, I want to acknowledge that many of the criticisms leveled here by other Amazon reviewers do have merit, primarily the charge that Updike's characters are often stereotypical. Of interest to me is that, while many reviewers complained about the stereotypes of fat wives, Arab-Americans and single mothers, I didn't notice any comments on the characters of African-American school girl Joryleen and her boyfriend, who is named "Tylenol," of all things. But in any case, since the stereotype issues have been well covered by other reviewers, I'm going to let that go and focus on what I see as the positives of this novel, and there really are quite a few.

For one thing, I like the fact that Updike chose this very difficult topic to write about and also made obvious efforts to understand aspects of Islamic-American culture that are doubtless utterly foreign to him. An author of his standing could just coast for the rest of his career, but this writer chose to stretch himself and try to get inside the mind of a character that represents a far more complex America than that of Rabbit, for example. This is an America that we had all better take a shot at understanding, since this is the one we are living in today, and will have to go on living in for some time to come. Believers in Islam are here and they are becoming an ever more important force in the polyglot US -- AND it is pretty clear that many of these folks are severely disaffected from the mainstream culture. *If* this alienation tends to encourage violent actions, then those of us who are of the so-called "majority" culture had better spend some time trying to understand why that is, and think about how we can help these new US residents succeed here. (That's a big IF, since it seems perfectly plausible to me that cultural alienation does not lead to "homegrown" terrorism at all. But for the purposes of this review, I am assuming that it could.)

Another positive of this novel is that it is beautifully written and highly evocative of place. The place happens to be a depressingly urbanized New Jersey, so it's easy to miss the power of Updike's descriptions, but consider this passage: "...the sky cloudless but for a puffy far scatter over Long Island, the ozone at the zenith so intense it seems a smooth-walled pit of blue fire, the accumulated towers of lower Manhattan a single gleaming mass, speedboats purring and sailboats tilting in the bay, the cries and conversation of the tourist crowd making a dapple of harmless sound around them. 'This beauty,' Ahmad thinks 'must mean something -- a hint from Allah, a foreshadow of Paradise.'

As for the criticism that Updike is anti-American and using the character of Ahmad to voice his own complaints, I counter by saying that it's important for us Americans to be more self-reflective than we may find comfortable, and that Updike is contributing something useful by raising important moral and ethical challenges to our behavior as a nation in the world. Take for example this line from pp. 198-9 of the novel: "[True adherents] believe that a billion followers of Islam need not have their eyes and ears and souls corrupted by the poisonous entertainments of Hollywood and a ruthless economic imperialism whose Christian-Jewish God is a decrepit idol, a mere mask concealing the despair of atheists."

Granted, that is powerful stuff and certainly discomfiting. But if one reads any of the world's press at all, it is pretty clear that this is the image that many people have of America, and the challenge Updike's characters are presenting in this novel seem to me to be worth considering. What sort of response shall we give to a comment like the above? How observant of our religious principles are the majority of us here in the US, and what about the economic fallout of our national trade and security policies? I am not saying that I agree with the assessments of the characters in this novel, nor do I necessarily think we should assume Updike does. But it is a view that we might at least consider if we hope to come to peaceable terms with the billions of Muslims who are solid citizens of this and the world's other nations, and who have no hostile intentions.

So, for me, the bottom line on Terrorist is that it's an important book that raises difficult questions that ought to be given some serious thought. We should be glad that Updike chose to write it.

Terrorist is the final novel of John Updike and could have been written today as it deals with contemporary issues such as broken families, school bullies, the gap between reality and idealism and one young man's mission. I highly recommend it.

Compelling

John Updike is back, and is again surprising his loyal readers. This time he engages with a powerful fiction that deals with themes of terrorism, religious fundamentalism, and the search for meaning.

Terrorist is the story of Ahmad Ashmawy Malloy, a seventeen-year-old child of an Irish-American mother and an Egyptian father who abandoned the family before Ahmad could form memories of him. When Ahmad turned eleven, he began pursuing his paternal heritage and converted to Islam. For Ahmad, Central High is as sea of temptation--gangs, drugs, and sexual openness; devils which attempt to lure him off the Straight Path.

Terrorist is also the story of Jack Levy, a depressed, nearly retired guidance counselor at Central High. Jack is a secular Jew, raised by a father who favored the promises of capitalism over the ancient covenant between God and his people. And now at the twilight of his career, Jack is overwhelmed by the purposelessness of his life. Instead of becoming a comic writer for Jackie Gleeson, Jack is trapped as a guidance counselor in a dilapidated school, serving teens who aren't interested in his advice.

Jack's responsibilities as guidance counselor entangles is purposeless life with the religious fervor of the soon-to-graduate Ahmad. Conflict mounts as Ahmad falls in with a newly immigrated Lebanese family and their jihad; while Jack grasps for significance in an extra-marital affair.

Terrorist is a tightly written thriller. Updike is known for his literary craftsmanship and he doesn't disappoint in his latest offering. I found myself pausing and rereading many of his descriptive passages out of utter enjoyment. Updike plunges the reader into the mind of a youthful, na�ve zealot and an aging cynic, all the while driving the plot forward with determined suspense. Updike keeps the reader in a state of fright right through the closing moments of the book.

Terrorist is about the search for meaning; Updike's rich characters pursue significance through religion, sex, materialism, and intellectual conceit. And every character is confronted with the realization that their bait is not catching fulfillment.

If there's a flaw to be found with Terrorist, it's that Updike traffics in stereotypes, only some of which are fair. Ahmed's propensity toward extremism is born out of growing up fatherless in blighted New Prospect. Jack is a humanist who bears the weight of knowing there is no God. Through his wife, Beth, Baptists are painted as fundamentalist cousins, separated only by degrees of violence.
Yet Updike brings these typecasts to life like a master marionette operator and the reader forgets the woodenness of the stereotype. He does with unflinching relational realism; and so a caution: strong language and a few bedroom scenes populate the book.

I strongly recommend Terrorist. It's relevant to today's headlines and I expect that its craftsmanship will keep this novel poignant for decades to come. The discerning reader will not only be entertained by the life and death drama, but challenged by the questions of meaning and belief.
