Read this great book!

Ross Shafer spoke at a conference I recently attended. Besides being the most entertaining speaker I have ever heard, he really opened my eyes to what I need to do to not only keep my business alive but how to actually make it grow. I headed straight to the bookstore so I could learn more. Clearly, the times have changed and the economy is new and different from what it was twenty years ago. Shafer shows readers that consumers' habits have changed right along with the economy, and how businesses can and NEED to respond to this phenomenon. The idea that you need to actively outmaneuver the competition to get your share of a limited market is just smart. After going through the case studies and examples Ross provides in this book, I feel like I have a better understanding of how to go about grabbing some market share. This book is flat out enlightening, so I recommend it to anybody who wants to increase their profit.

This guy Ross Shafer is a genius. In his book he shows how to grab more market share at a time when most markets are not growing. He thinks years down the road which help companies to stay relevant and ahead of the competition. He identifies trends that most people cannot see. He explains how to spot the next customer revolution and how the customer wants to be treated--not the same old "the customer is always right," but how you need to be concerned with customer urgency. He uses examples of famous, successful companies that have gone bust by not remaining reactive to the market's needs. You can wrangle business away from lazy competitors by reading Grab More Market Share--it has worked for me.

Don't let the brevity of this book put you off. There are many big ideas in this little book. In addition to the plethora of quick case studies, there are lots of insights you can use in your business. Shafer is an astute observer of business, customers and what it takes to succeed in today's competitive environment. He thinks beyond the obvious (from customer service to customer urgency). If you are looking for actionable ideas on how to take marketshare from your competition, then read this book.

Grade 7 Up–The enduring strength of The Tempest lies in Shakespeare's poetic language, and this abridgment offers richly illustrated sound bites of some of its most famous lines. The theatrical qualities of manga are well suited to the romantic drama and fairy-tale elements of the play, moving the story forward while enhancing the meaning of the poetry. This art form lends itself well to the images of Ariel's invisibility to all but Prospero, Antonio and Sebastian plotting the deaths of Alonso and Gonzolo as they circle the sleeping bodies, Miranda's large eyes weeping as Ferdinand declares his love, and Prospero's finger drying her tears while saying, Fair encounter of two most rare affections! Heavens rain grace on that which breeds between them. This adaptation follows the series format: the book is read from left to right and the cast of characters appears up front. Both the introduction and a map showing the location of major events help readers follow the plot. One obstacle is the abrupt change of scenes with no visual clue that the story has shifted to another scene. Back matter includes a plot summary and brief biography of Shakespeare. This adaptation would be useful both as an introduction to the play and as a companion piece for classroom study of it, using images to illuminate the Bard's eloquent poetry.–Barbara M. A sometimes entertaining graphic (Manga) novel version of Shakespeare's Tempest.

I have read most of William Shakespeare’s plays many years ago and when I saw the Manga Shakespeare graphic novels had published many of Shakespeare’s work I purchased several of these graphic novel books.

As anyone who has read and/or seen Shakespeare’s plays knows that much of his material deals with tragedy and conflict within various kingdoms. I just finished reading The Tempest (A Manga Shakespeare Graphic novel illustrated by Paul Duffield)) and this book tells the story of Prospero who was the rightful Duke of Milan but was betrayed by his brother, Antonio who stole the position. In order to get rid of his brother Antonio cast Prospero and his infant daughter in a boat out to sea. Antonio expects his brother and young niece to perish at sea but this does not happen.

I never like to give away too much information when reviewing any novel but those who have never read this Shakespeare tale should check out this graphic novel version. The clear illustrations make the story come alive.

My 12 year old is obsessed with these books. They all have different artists which she loves and SHE IS READING SHAKESPEARE!!!!! What can I say. A wonderful way to make Shakespeare accessible to a young audience. Now my 11 and 9 year old are into them too and we now have all of them.
The only reason I am giving them a 4 and not a 5 is the bindings are not the best and i have bought one twice as the pages started falling out. I know they are left out open and face down and read a LOT, but so are a lot of other books of ours and they are still intact.

Earlier philosophers, such as Carl Hempel, dismissed understanding as subjective and pragmatic. They believed that the essence of science was to be found in scientific theories and explanations. In Scientific Understanding, the contributors maintain that we must also consider the relation between explanations and the scientists who construct and use them. They focus on understanding as the cognitive state that is a goal of explanation and on the understanding of theories and models as a means to this end.

The chapters in this book highlight the multifaceted nature of the process of scientific research. The contributors examine current uses of theory, models, simulations, and experiments to evaluate the degree to which these elements contribute to understanding. Their analyses pay due attention to the roles of intelligibility, tacit knowledge, and feelings of understanding. Furthermore, they investigate how understanding is obtained within diverse scientific disciplines and examine how the acquisition of understanding depends on specific contexts, the objects of study, and the stated aims of research.

About the Author
Henk de Regt is a philosophy lecturer at VU University Amsterdam. He has published on the history and philosophy of science, with a focus on scientific explanation and understanding. He is co-founder of the European Philosophy of Science Association and of the Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice.

Sabina Leonelli is a research fellow of the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society (Egenis) at the University of Exeter, UK. She investigates philosophical issues in relation to bioinformatics and model organism research in the biomedical sciences.

Kai Eigner teaches philosophy of science at VU University Amsterdam. His research focuses on scientific understanding in the behavioral and cognitive sciences.

Well done historical fiction

Very interesting historical fiction - in many ways reminded me of Mary Hooper, which is entirely a compliment. However, things like lamb's innards, etc. kind of haunt you throughout. A rushed ending as well that was a little odd.

The complexity of border culture is graphically drawn, with its omnipresent threats of la migra, unemployment, bigotry and despair. Blake begins the collection with an engaging and informative introductory memoir, a chronology of his childhood in the borderlands and of his mixed Mexican/Texan heritage. The stories that follow are brutal, stark and horrifying; in "Runaway Horses," a just-widowed man is driven mad when he attempts to deliver just punishment to his wife's rapist and murderer. In another narrative, an illegal immigrant falls in love with an ex-prostitute with three children, but succumbs to his fear of commitment. Female characters suffer violently in these stories, often victims of rape, incest or murder. "Texas Woman Blues" is a searing portrait of hopelessness and horror. Dolores (dolar, pain in Spanish) experiences a lifetime of pain before her 17th birthday. Abandoned by her father, who ends up in prison, on her mother's death she is sent to live with relatives and is raped by her uncle. When she finally bolts free, the cycle of victimization expands into a bleak and unforgettable chronicle of dead-end options. Blake writes with a fearless precision and a ruthless sensibility, his prose is spare and tough, and his descriptions detailed and cinematic. This is gritty, raw, bare-knuckled fiction, blazing with an extraordinary kind of violence, and certainly not for the faint of heart.

Blake's (In the Rogue Blood, LJ 9/1/97) first collection of short fiction begins with an autobiographical account and then turns to a series of linked fictions about poor, young, hard-working, dignified Mexican or Mexican American men, some of whom have immigrated to the United States looking for a better life. One loses his savings to a gun-toting hitchhiker, another falls for an ex-prostitute. A third becomes a boxer, only to lose a championship fight to his arrogant schoolmate. He then becomes a referee and takes his revenge. In the final story, "Texas Woman Blues," a young woman named Dolores leads a peripatetic life in hardscrabble southern Texas, the territory staked out by novelist Lionel Garc!a. Time and again men use her, until she falls in love with Buddy. Then Buddy is killed, and soon Dolores, saddled with two unloved children, commits suicide. Blake's talent is obvious, especially in the first stories, but "Texas Woman Blues" could have been longer and more developed. This book is a collection of eight short stories, some are better than others but not one is bad. The first story is about a rich Mexican landlord (hacienda owner) of "noble" decesent from Spanish ancestors. He is not the worst guy in the world and he loves his wife and children. However, he has no social conciounse and does not question his elite and privliged status which comes at the expense of so many other people. He takes his blessed life for granted, thinking it the "natural" order of things. The peons on his estate live miserable lives of drugery while he lavishes in a fine mansion and does no work. Never does it occur to him that this situation is complety unjust. He views thieves and bandits who steal from him as scum but what other option do they have, either they become theives or stay peons on some rich landlords estate. He is ruthless with these thieves who steal only a fraction of his wealth but life eventually pays him back for his privilaged existence which is founded on such total social and economic injustice. Then again, the thieves are low lives without morales but the society they inhabit contributes to them becoming so evil. This story is another tale where the morality of the main character is ambigious as is the morality of that characters adversaries. The reader feels kind of sorry for the rich landlord in this story but also feels that he kind of deserved what he got. Their are two stories about Mexican illegal immigrants who pick fruit for money in America and live harsh lives of poverty. They are exploited and betrayed at every turn, even by members of their own race. "Texas Women Blues" is by far the most distrubing piece of writing I have read from Blake because instead of tough guys killing each other in filthy ways it documents the lonely and disturbed existence of a beautiful but neglacted and abused young women. She is betrayed over and over and also has bad luck. What happens to this poor young girl, she is only 17, is sick, her innocence and ignorance is used against her as a weapon by older, seasoned, men. They misled and trap her and she is misused and abused sexually. She is never the same after this and her whole life from this point on is warped because of one horrific night. Her misguided trust in strangers and her passive nature were unwise in such a cold, ruthless world run on exploitation. Her downward spiral is a terrible thing to behold because she really was a nice, decent, intelligent girl who would have had a bright future if she had any parental guidance. But instead she is cast into the world alone and unguared and the inevitable explotation of the innocent occures. My favorite story in this book however is the Ref, I cold really relate to this story because I identified with the main character. He was always second best to this guy he went to school with, Mato. This guy was no loser but he was always a step behind Mato who won every contest they had. This two were both boxers and they both wanted the same girl. They fight for her and the other guy wins and goes of with the girl and gets to have sex with her while the guy who losses the fight goes home alone all beat up. If that was not bad enough his ambitons to become a boxer are spoiled by the same guy. He fights him three times and losses all three times. And if that was not bad enough the girl that they fought over in high school comes back into the main characters life. At this point the main character has quit boxing and become a referee, which he is good at. The girl he knew from high school and him have a relationship but one night they run into Mato, who is now a boxing champion. History repeats itself and just like Mato took the main character's girl in high school he takes her again as adults. This girl is hot but untrustworthy, she has no loyality and is always looking for the bigger, better deal. She leaves the main character to go with Mato a second time. Once was bad enough, but to leave the main character twice, for the same guy, talk about rubbing salt in the wound and adding insult to injury! However, the main character, the ref, has the last laugh, because he is officating Mato's next title defense. When Mato brings the girl with him to ringside, the main character decides enough is enough. His revenge will similtaniously distrub and satisfy you, a characteristic common to all of Blake's writing I notice. This collection is great.
