An excellent command level overview

The author extends his strategic coverage of his two previous books by covering Operation Typhoon with the same logic, flair and extensive research of those books.
To my surprise this book covers only the fighting and command decisions of October which primarily included the pocket battles of Vyazma and Bryansk while the next book will be devoted to the final advance on Moscow, ending on December 5th.(I'm hoping Mr Stahel will then write about the German defense of Zhukov's counter offensive.)

As a prelude to the main story, a recap of Operation Barbarossa and Guderian's run to Kiev is presented to bring the reader up to speed. A brief historical military summary of Germany going back to the 12th century is also given that includes the influence of Clausewitz Theory has on German commanders. Napoleon's attempts to conquer Russia also plays heavy on Hitler and other key officers. As usual the German perspective concerning operational, strategic and political aspects drive the narrative.

Also as usual, the author has performed a tremendous amount of research for he covers Operation Typhoon on a daily basis and include many battle facts on individual corps and divisions along with their respective commanders as they struggle to close and eliminate the pockets at Vyazma and Bryansk while 3rd PzA heads for Kalinin. In addition to showing the fanatical resistance of the Soviets in trying to escape their doom, Mr Stahel also clearly shows how disgruntled German commanders fought among themselves, a delusional OKH that wouldn't see the severity of fighting for what it was, rainy weather, impossible muddy roads, terrible logistics and lack of fuel would bring the German Army to an abrupt halt by the end of October. The AGC had not fully recovered from the fighting in August and September and with the casualties of October was in no position to tackle Moscow in 1941, especially in the disposition OKH had ordered. Forging a salient from Kalinin to Tula all the way to Moscow was just too unreasonable.

Once again it is shown that regardless of "winning battles", the German Army with its own problems and its inability to see the true cost of those victories were over extending themselves, suffering too many casualties and making too many strategic errors that would prevent the capture of Moscow in 1941 or ever. On the other side of the ledger, its shown how thousands of Russians escaped the pockets to fight another day as well as the stubborn resistance within the pockets that caused the Germans until almost the end of October to eliminate the pockets and devote their full attention on moving on Moscow. This resistance gave Zhukov time to improve defenses and bring reserves up to the line in sufficient levels to stop the Germans in early December. Though the coverage is predominately German, there is still sufficient coverage of Soviet responses, especially when Zhukov is in sector for the reader to have a good understanding of the overall campaign. It is clearly shown that in many local battles at the pockets and at Kalinin that the Soviets actually halted the German advance while causing massive casualties.

I believe the book is further enhanced in describing the operation and the positional stance of the author that the Germans were bleeding themselves white while advancing toward Moscow by the careful selection of excerpts from primary documents and the hundreds of first hand accounts chosen to back up his positions.

In addition to the excellent overview, the author presents 15 detailed maps drawn by David Glantz that show divisional deployments and progress. The series of maps clearly show the quick envelopment of Vyazma and Bryansk in the first week of the operation and then the subsequent slowing of the advance due to a myriad of reasons. The maps will definitely aid the reader in following the narrative and Mr Stahel includes map references on some of the key battles, letting the reader move quickly to the proper map. The book also includes a few tables and photos, a 67 page Notes Section and an impressive Bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The book closes with an Index. This material is invaluable if further study is desired.

Operation Typhoon dovetails logically with the author's two earlier books in both battlefield strategy as well as the economic and political arenas and if you enjoyed those books, you'll definitely enjoy this book. And if you haven't read those earlier books, the first chapter summarizes and will give you sufficient background knowledge so you won't miss a beat reading this book.

I find Mr Stahel's writing style interesting and effective; I find the story development and premise logical and hard to dispute. This book along with the author's earlier books provide key insight into the war and I highly recommend this book to all students of the Russo-German War.

Excellent book, his best yet!

The title of this book is somewhat misleading. It is really about the Battle of Bryansk-Vyazma in October 1941, a gigantic double encirclement battle which was the second biggest German victory of the war, after the Battle of Kiev in September. The book's title should really have called attention to that fact, because there are very, very few books in English on Bryansk-Vyazma. The book thus fills an important gap in the literature.

I criticized his previous book, on Kiev, for not being tightly focused on its subject, and for having poor maps. I am happy to say this book does NOT have those problems. He sets the stage in his first tightly written chapter by describing what happened in the USSR from June to October, and the majority of the book focuses on October. The maps, once again from David Glantz, cover the battle of Bryansk-Vyazma in close detail (eleven maps for a four week period!) and are of high quality.

Some other reviewers write that Stahel is continuing the same themes from his previous books. This is true to some extent, but there is actually no reason to expect the same Army, under the same leadership, to be radically different in October than it was in August and September. Even given that his view of the fundamental problems of the German Army is much the same in this book as the previous ones, there is certainly enough new material in here on the actual operations in October to justify a new book.

Stahel concludes that the Germans won a tactical and operational victory but could not translate this into strategic success. The German Army won a battle, but could not win the war. He also notes that the Soviets were preparing a defense-in-depth of Moscow itself, meaning that if the Germans had reached the city in October or November, they would not have taken it easily, but would have been bogged down in protracted, draining urban combat.

He notes the German propaganda campaign in October, which announced that "Russia is beaten, and the Red Army is annihilated", only set up the German population for a huge disappointment when the Wehrmacht did not take Moscow after all, and the war continued. Finally, although the main perspective of the book is that of the strategic and operational commanders, he includes perspectives from the front line soldiers (which mainly serves to indicate that the higher headquarters were living in a fantasy world).

In conclusion, this is Stahel's best one yet, and a worthy addition to any collection of books on the Eastern Front.

Excellent research and well written

This book continues from the author's previous books, Barbarossa and Kiev, with the story of the war in the east between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1941. The initial 40+ pages are spent as a review of these events, but I still recommend that you read these two previous books to get the primary value before reading this one.

Just like the other two books this book has excellent research and is well written. The book covers all aspects of the German's campaign to take Moscow in October, 1941 from strategic to the experiences of the individual soldiers. In fact, the examples of the experiences of the individual soldiers are the best part of the this book - from combat, to environment (the mud, the cold and the leeches) to recovery from wounds and sickness. This was the most violent and brutal combat experienced purportedly and this book provides some insight on that.

As covered in the previous two books, the author highlights that by this time the Germans really had no chance to win the war in the East. Even if they took Moscow, the Russians had moved manufacturing and the government offices hundreds of kilometers east. There was no way that the Soviet Union was going to surrender and the Nazis were naive to think so.

The author goes into a lot of detail and facts on why the Germans were not successful in this campaign and "General Mud" as commonly mentioned was not the primary reason. The logistics in support of the German front line soldiers, for example, was atrocious. There are many examples provided in the book of units running out of fuel and the attempts to bring supplies to them.

This book compares well with the book, The Drive on Moscow, 1941 and, if you are interested in this, I recommend that you read both to get a good picture of the events on the Eastern Front in 1941.

About the Author

Diane Barrett is the president of NextGard Technology and a professor for Bloomsburg University. She has done contract forensic and security assessment work for several years and has authored several other security and forensic books. She is a program director for ADFSL’s Conference on Digital Forensics, Security, and Law; the DFCP certification chair for the Digital Forensic Certification Board; and a volunteer for the NIST Cloud Computing Forensic Science Challenges working group. She holds many industry certifications, including CISSP, ISSMP, DFCP, and PCME, along with several from CompTIA, including Security+. Diane’s education includes a Ph.D. in business administration with a specialization in information security and a master of science degree in information technology with a specialization in information security.

Kalani Kirk Hausman is an author, GRC professional, enterprise and security architect, ISO, and consultant with experience that includes mediumto large-scale globally deployed networks in governmental, higher education, healthcare, and corporate settings. Pearson Test aren't per chapter. Test included is not complete

I purchased this as a google book. Then decided I wanted the paperback and the testing materials. The Pearson tests do not work correctly and they aren't in any hurry to fix it. The PDF test on the cd, has questions from all over the book. The Pearson test software has questions from all over the book. The function to take a test after each chapter DOES NOT WORK! So if you would like a test after each chapter to see what you need to re read you are SOL and Pearson certainly doesn't care! Also you will find out there are more questions available at Pearson if you pay more money...hmmm The Pearson IT Certification practice tests included in this book are incomplete and do not work as advertised! I may as well go back to the online book from google. Any chance I can get my money back for the paperback and useless test

Masterpiece

Once again Sue Ann thrills with Emma and Granny. The whole family plays more of a part in this story, which I liked. The adventure Emma and Granny go on actually was almost in my backyard. What's in the future for Emma and Phil? Sue Ann leaves you wanting more, and more soon! LOL This is a wonderful read, I didn't want to put it down once I started. It's another favorite!

Emma and Granny Face Dangers of Flesh and Ghost

Emma is surprised to get a lunch invitation from Joanna Reid. The two had never been close and hadn't spoken since her husband died a few years before. Joanna is convinced that her late husband, Max, is haunting her and wants Emma to make him go away.

A few hours later, Emma learns that Joanna's daughter Lainey is in a mental health facility after three attempts to commit suicide. Lainey and Emma's own daughter are good friends, so Emma pays the young woman a visit. After the talk, Emma thinks that a ghost might be involved in Lainey's attempts on her own life. But is it Max or someone else? Can Emma figure out the cause in time to keep Lainey safe?

I've enjoyed the previous two books in this series, and this was the strongest yet. The characters, both living and ghostly, are vivid and pull you into the story. There were times some of the characters were doing some stupid things, but even then I usually felt sorry for them.

The plot moves forward on two levels involving the present and the past. Both mysteries are compelling, although I usually found myself more involved in the modern mystery. Yet the historic mystery packed a real emotional punch in the end.

There was a sub-plot I didn't like because Emma was being stupid and complicating her life. I'll be looking forward to seeing how that gets resolved in future books.

This is a compelling read with great characters that will keep you turning pages until you reach the end.

Enjoyable

I have read all of the books written by this author, Sue Ann Jaffarian. I have enjoyed each and every one of them. The Granny Apples series gets better with each and every new book. You need to read all of her series. She has three, The Odelia Grey series, The Madison Rose series and of course Granny Apples. This author has a way of not only letting you enjoy the current book; but at the same time you want the next one to appear magically so you can continue to follow the lives of the characters.

The first personal computer, a self-contained unit with its own programmable processor, display, keyboard, internal memory, telephone interface, and mass storage of data was born in San Antonio TX. US Patent number 224,415 was filed November 27, 1970 for a machine that is the direct lineal ancestor to the PC as we know it today. The story begins in 1968, when two Texans, Phil Ray and Gus Roche, founded a firm called Computer Terminal Corporation. As the name implies their first product was a Datapoint 3300 computer terminal replacement for a mechanical Teletype. However, they knew all the while that the 3300 was only a way to get started, and it was cover for what their real intentions were - to create a programmable mass-produced desktop computer. They brought in Jack Frassanito, Vic Poor, Jonathan Schmidt, Harry Pyle and a team of designers, engineers and programmers to create the Datapoint 2200. In an attempt to reduce the size and power requirement of the computer it became apparent that the 2200 processor could be printed on a silicon chip. Datapoint approached Intel who rejected the concept as a "dumb idea" but were willing to try for a development contract. Intel belatedly came back with their chip but by then the Datapoint 2200 was already in production. Intel added the chip to its catalog designating it the 8008. A later upgrade, the 8080 formed the heart of the Altair and IMSI in the mid-seventies. With further development it was used in the first IBM PC-the PC revolution's chip dynasty. The Datapoint story - great book

If someone told you the PC was actually invented in San Antonio, Texas, in 1968 while Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were still in middle school, would you believe them? Probably not, but in fact it was and led the then infant Intel Corporation into the development of their now famous 4004, the ancestral microprocessor of all PCs built since then. San Antonio, in the late 60s, imagine.

I ran a company in San Antonio in that era called Data Graphics Corporation. We were in competition with Datapoint, not for customers, but for engineers. They'd steal two from us, we'd take one from them. We sold DGC and moved to California. Datapoint stayed in San Antonio and went on to become a Fortune 500 leading technology company. They invented the Local Area Network, Video Conferencing, and, of course, the first PC -- except they didn't call it a PC, they called it the Datapoint 2200, a "glass" IBM card punch replacement.

Later I started another company, Jupiter Systems, to build graphics terminals. The industrial designer who designed our cabinets was none other than Jack Frassanito, the guy who was the industrial designer of the Datapoint 2200. Jack and I stayed friends over the years. When I mentioned to him I was writing a book (The History of Visual Magic in Computers) he suggested, no he demanded, I include Datapoint, and the 2200, and get it right about being the first effective PC. I'm glad he did, my book is the better for it--yet another debt to Jack.

If you have the slightest interest in the history of computers, and like a good story, this book was written for you. Lamont Wood started the project by writing an article for the San Antonio Light newspaper. His research sent him chasing after company documents and the founders, most of whom are dead now. That lead him to Jack. From there, a collaboration developed, sometimes tested and strained, but long-lasting because they both believed in the importance of the story.

Datapoint rose and then fell. Lamont has given us his analysis of how it occurred, but having started a few companies I can tell you it wears you out. And I think that was one of the contributors to the company's demise. The company is criticized for not adapting to changes in technology fast enough There were plenty in those days. But to do that you have to be willing to give up what you have already developed and be your own competitor--and that takes courage and stamina. I think the management just ran out of both.

Read Lamont's book and see what you think. One thing's for sure, you will be amazed at what Datapoint did, and how far ahead of every other company they were. It's an astonishing story, well written, easy to read, and full of facts and interesting anecdotes. And the bonus is, you can bring it up at parties and either look very smart, and/or win bets.

Amazing Account of A Failed Company

Having worked for Computer Terminal Corporation in 1972, I personally saw the company through its brilliant rise up to the demise of the company. I left in 1992, but I saw the changes that resulted when an excellent company grew too fast, and the bad business decisions that resulted in the eventual demise of the company in 1996.

Datapoint was a remarkable company, and anyone who's interested in computers will want to hear what brought such an innovative company to its knees and resulted in it having to close.

It is sad that most of the original players are gone now, and one of the original people in the forming of the company (mentioned and a contributer of information in the book), Jack Frassanito, is still very much alive and kicking. These original founders were absolute geniuses who constructed a company at eat right time and competed with the big boys at the time, IBM, DEC, and HP. Read the book and see how they did it.

Read this book and learn that the computer you're using is a direct descendent of the original Datapoint machine, and that Datapoint had a working and active LAN system working and in use by customers years before any other company did. How did the company lose this edge? Read the book and find out how they were unable to capitalize on this advantage.

I am fortunate to have two copies in my possession. One book, the larger hardback copy was presented to me by Mr. Frassanito. The soft cover version was given to me by Austin Roche, son of one of the original founders, Gus Roche.

Both books are of high quality print, but the hard cover version has glossy pages and much clearer pictures. The book features pictures of the players, and charts and other nice information that is logically laid out.

The only gripe, if you can call it that, is the dry manner the story is told. If you have a particular interest in Datapoint, you will, for sure, want a copy that lays out the history of a remarkable company. People will be surprised to learn that PCs and microprocessors were the idea of geniuses living in Texas of all places!

The Real Story of the PC

Lamont provides insight about the true origin of the first integrated personal computer, washing away the incomplete lore and popular distortions that many in the computer industry have come to accept. It turns out to be more complex and interesting than is commonly understood by the public and most of those who worked on computer design during the 60's, 70s and 80's.

I believe this is the most informed and complete account written about Computer Terminal Corp/Datapoint Corp, the key role they played in creating the PC revolution and their sustained innovation and presence in the industry for decades. Lamont has done his research well, providing both corroborated facts and balanced assessment of areas where individual recollections differ.

If you want to really understand how mainframe and time share computing transitioned to the PC revolution and who the true players were, read Lamont's book. It is well written, interesting history, challenging to the status quo and valuable remembrance of how innovative individuals act in teams to build technology foundations that drive new world views.
