I was doing a research paper on Scottish folk tales. I was surprised at the lack of materials in the public and academic libraries. I went to Amazon to frantically search for a book to help in my research. This book not only had the wonderful folk tales I was searching for; it also had information on the history of Scottish folklore. Great book for folk tales.

Delightful and thorough

I gave this book to my Scottish partner as a holiday gift in 2010 and he loved it. It's a literal reprint (old-fashioned type and all) of the original 110-yo book, fully footnoted, explained and documented. Nevertheless, George Douglas retains enough love for his subject to retell these classic and lost tales with engaging, virtuoso skill.

Scottsman and his Tales...

This is a terrific book.
It is well put together and easy enough on the eyes.
However, the native Scottish tongue can sometimes
be difficult to translate in some of the tales.
I enjoy it and read it every so often.
It's a nice break from the old three bears
and a great way to get back to my heritage!

BUY, don't rent!

I HIGHLY recommend buying this book as opposed to renting it. I took an online Excel course this past semester to update my employment skills. Amazon was out of stock when I needed this book so I ended up renting it through chegg.com. Before the class was over, I was lamenting the fact that I had not purchased it. I knew NOTHING about Excel before the class and one day after the class concluded I was offered a job specifically because I knew how to use the program. The fact that this book is written in a step-by-step manner and is easy to follow and backtrack your steps if you happen to make a mistake was instrumental in me learning and retaining the information presented in the lessons. It made the online class very smooth-sailing for me in part because you do not need to know computer/technology lingo to follow the directions; it is explained to you in plain English. I found this book so useful that I BOUGHT it yesterday through chegg.com (used for $48.99) to keep on my desk as a reference at my new job. You will definitely learn Excel even if you just rent this book, but there are so many things that you can do with this program to make your life and job easier that (IMO) you will regret not having bought it in the first place.

Soul-crushing.

I wish I could give this book less than one star. It is terrible. Truly awful. After four years for an undergraduate degree and two-and-a-half more for a masters, I can say this is the most soul-crushing, deadly-boring, poorly written text I've come across. It seems as if the author is playing a game with himself: "If it takes ten words to make my point, how many more words can I add to stretch it to a paragraph?" You'd think the publisher is paying by the word. If there is literally ANY other book you can buy, please: Buy something else. This book is so bad my classmates have actually wondered out loud if Mr. Zunker secretly hates the person to whom the book is dedicated. Yes. That bad.

I get it: career counseling is a less-than-scintillating topic under any circumstances. And I appreciate the time and effort Mr. Zunker clearly put in to writing it. This book desperately needs an editor to help the author say what he needs to say, because he could say it with a lot fewer words and in a way that doesn't make me absolutely dread cracking the book open.

This is an awful book. The author writes it in a way that is unclear and confusing to understand. My whole class is confused behind all the theories in Ch. 2 which I feel like he should have had more chapters explaining the theories without making them seem similar from each other.

Boring and hard to understand

This book is terrible. I can usually power through boring textbooks for the sake of a good grade, but this one was especially difficult to read. It is boring. VERY boring. What gets me the most though is how confusing it is. The terms and key words seem to be used interchangeably, which makes reading through information rich chapters like theories EXTREMELY difficult.

If your professor has assigned this book for your Career Counseling class, good luck. That is all I can really say.

Short Stories

A book of short stories about animals living in the woods. Some are from the perspective of the Rabbit or Fox, others are from the perspective of the Hunter. The narrative in the happy parts is inviting and fun to read, viewing the simple life of a rabbit or grouse in a meadow. The initial story covers the life of a wolf and its territory focusing on killing of livestock in the late 1800s. This results in hunting the wolf and the end result isn't pretty. The life cycle of animals from birth to death is a theme. The initial story can be read to get a glimpse of wolf hunting in the United States. It is written at the 6th to 8th grade level. The use of vernacular can be antiquated or archaic. The book was listed on the 1908 Minnesota 7th and 8th Grade Reading List.

A Very Nice What-if Variation

When I read the first chapters of Rain and Retribution I was unsure I liked this Elizabeth Bennett. The witty and easy-to-satisfy young woman we love is replaced by a petulant teenager who slams the door to her father. Elizabeth, who had been described by J. Austen as "it was her business to be satisfied and certainly her temper to be happy..." (Pride and Prejudice), has left the novel and it is shocking. Once she meets Darcy and recognizes what he is, the J. Austen creation is once again recognizable and the novel takes form.

I have enjoyed Rain and Retribution because it is well written. Even if some dialogue is rendered in a more contemporary language, the whole is unified in that nothing stops you in your tracks. Some characters have been redesigned and I am happy for it. It gives more bones to secondary characters (Jane, Georgiana, Wickham). I did not mind at all that the tension of the novel is not on the principal characters, bur more to the actions and to an apprehension of what might happen next. I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of this book by giving the end away, so I won't say more, except that I liked the plot and the loving Darcys. The love scenes may shock some, but it was fine with me. Definitely not the worst I have read in the P&P spin offs.

The reason I don't give five star is that I did not feel compelled to turn the pages. I did read this book in a few days, much more than others not as well written, but more tightly knitted. The apprehension I felt was not a dread, nor did I ever felt like my heroes were in danger of not making it, whether not find themselves or being killed or separated (except for the few lat pages, that is). I may be obtuse but I never saw it coming, so I did not dread it...

If I could I would give this novel a 4 1/2 stars just for this little imperfection. Absolutely worth the hours of reading!

5 stars for most of the book, 3 stars for the conclusion

There is a great deal to enjoy in this book and I would dearly love to give it 5 stars, but I was disappointed in the author's choices in tying up many of her plot lines.

Starting with the positives, this is beautifully written with great character development. I was delighted with the "what if" deviations from the original, particularly in 3 areas: Mr. Bennet's determination that Lizzy must marry Mr Collins (not at all unbelievable, given the Regency times the story is set in), Jane's attitude toward Mr. Bingley being exactly as Mr. Darcy believes rather than heartbroken when he leaves Netherfield, and especially Georgiana's adolescent petulance and LACK of hero-worship of her big brother. Specifically addressing the last one, it made perfect sense that an oversheltered orphan going through puberty with only a brother who has no parenting experience would have some issues being under his authority. Well done, Ms. Diamond!

However, this book is not for those looking for happily-ever-after endings. While not exactly a HAMLET, this is NOT a lighthearted MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Not wishing to spoil the surprises in store for those who will read RAIN AND RETRIBUTION (which, honestly, is well worth reading), I will say that I was reveling in the author's skill at giving compelling motivations to all the characters for their actions, I was vicariously cheering for Darcy's and Elizabeth's strong marriage despite the challenges Georgiana presents throughout, I was immersed, I was enchanted, and I was anticipating that, just as in every P&P variation I've ever read (which number in the hundreds), all would be well in the end, when, all at once, I was startled to realize that all would NOT be well.

From roughly the time in the book where the news hits that Lydia has run off with Wickham, things get ugly. The plot goes from refreshingly believable to over-the-top melodramatic complete with a raging storm keeping our hero and heroine apart, and most particularly in the pivotal scene, where one character is exposed as dangerously insane and 2 major characters are killed. At the conclusion, families are still irrevocably broken apart and the Bennet family is more or less ruined. Not how one expects a feel-good romance story to end, is it?

I would still highly recommend it, as long as you are forewarned that there is as much tragedy as there is romance in the concluding chapters.

Oh, and yes, there's lots of sex throughout, but those scenes are as well written as the rest of the book and are only after they are married. There's perhaps more of it than is necessary, but that's a matter of personal taste. I know there are some who think ANY explicit sexual content is abhorrent, so, if you're one of them, this book isn't for you.

Great book

So glad to finally read a well written sequel, pickings have been slim lately. The story line was fantastic and different, Darcy and lizzy passionate and so in love, even from the start. All in all this book is a pleasure, do yourself a favor. I have read every sequel printed and can say this is up there.

His later work has moved on to the terrain of hybridity, identity, Occidentalism, race relations. multiculturalism and the politics of difference. Okay

This was a required text for my studio art course at my university, and while it did make some interesting points, the layout of the book can be a bit frustrating for visual learners (ie, the people this book is supposed to be marketed towards). Often the author will refer to works that are either pictured several pages away, or not at all, and only the center few pages are in color. Oh well. If you aren't bothered by the lack of visual examples in an art textbook, go for it though. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty interesting, informative book. Just have Google Images open on standby.

Excellent manual

An excellent manual for those who really want to understand what is Contemporary Art about. Gives a representative list of contemporary artists focusing in theoritical analysis of their work. Very usefull for those who frequently visit museums and exhibitions.

Belongs in an academic journal

The second edition of this book is poorly edited. There are many spelling mistakes throughout the book, which is inexcusable as almost all of them can be caught by computer now. Semicolons and commas are incorrectly swapped on a regular basis. For a second edition textbook, I find it to be a poor example of educational writing.

The examples given are horribly inaccurate. For example, in section 8.5.1, "ls wc | w" is given as an example of composition-based reuse. On my computer, at least, this attempts to run ls on the file wc, and then pipes the output of that to the w command. What was intended is the still-inaccurate, "ls | wc -w", which counts the number of words in a directory. The correct command would be "ls | wc -l", which counts the number of files (each is printed on a separate line by ls).

All of these things would be forgivable, however, if the main text itself were interesting. Unfortunately, it instead reads like a first edition masters' thesis, complete with academic pretentiousness, sub-sub-subsections (i.e. 8.5.2.2), useless diagrams, and references [226] to other peoples' [10] master theses [153].

It is my course book. The book provides complete information about the subject. Unfortunately there are many spelling mistakes, and moreover the English of the book is somewhat odd.
