Financial Infidelity

"The first time I cheated on my wife we ended up without a kitchen. Hi, my name is Scott, and I have committed financial infidelity." That's the first line in this book, and I didn't put it down until I read the whole thing. The authors are the real deal.

This year you may not be able to increase your salary and benefits, but you can increase your financial acumen. In the long run, that may be one of the best benefits you'll ever receive.

Bethany and Scott Palmer, "The Money Couple," have written a practical and timely guide to help couples with financial communication. Their unique idea: the root cause of money troubles is not a lack of money or budget systems, it is financial infidelity.

You'll learn about the five money personalities: Saver, Spender, Risk Taker, Security Seeker, and Flyer (as in flying by the seat of your pants). What's your personality? How about your spouse? What happens when Spenders marry Savers? (They explain and give amazing counsel.)

Peace of mind before marriage!

My betrothed and I have differing views of money and it really worried me. This is a second marriage for me and a third marriage for him. When I found a recommendation for this book in a magazine article I immediately ordered it. Praise the Lord, my sweetheart and I both read the book and worked through the ending chapters. We will continue to use suggestions from this book. We may never see totally eye-to-eye on money issues, but we can talk about them and understand each other so much better. I am now totally comfortable with marrying this person. Thank you so much for such a helpful book.

After getting married, I was looking for a book about how to integrate my spending and saving habits with my husband's. This book is more for couples who already have financial problems, not for couples who are being preemptive.

a classic work on strategy

This book on strategy is one of the best and clearest texts ever written. Lasker claims that by following a few principles of strategy which he gives one can play chess very well. A large part of the book is devoted to illustrative games to show how these strategic principles have been applied by masters. These games show that by learning how to clear files, concentrating forces in the center of the board, and keeping pawn movement down to only the most needed ones, you can become a master. I improved by playing greatly by playing three of the illustrative games in back of the book, and learning everything I could from these three games. The book should be read and reread and the illustrative games played over and over again. You will learn something each time. With enough work and rereading and application of the principles in this book, one can become a strategic master.

An Out of Date Classic of Chess Literature.

This book was consider the "Chess Bible" when published many many years ago, but now is out-dated. Even the author considered the book to be out-dated when he wrote his modern version "Modern chess strategy". Don't buy this one, look instead for the "Modern" revision.

In this last book the author uses a clear and conversational style to clarify problems that may seem difficult or confusing for the beginner or casual player. Even if you don't know the first thing about chess, this book can help you learn the fundamentals behind chess strategy and become a good player within a short period of time. The book is profusely illustrated with hundreds of diagrams and annotated games.

A Perennial Chess Classic

For the average player who wants to further his enjoyment of chess while learning the essential strategic principles of the game, Edward Lasker's "Chess Strategy" may well be the only chess book he will ever need. I recall fondly how this book enabled me and my brother to beat every kid in our high school. I'm now middle aged and am again reading the book, reviewing the various topics, and playing over the many fine example games. I find that I'm still very impressed by the author's clear, logical, and systematic approach to the game as well as his warm and personal style. If you've been playing chess for awhile, but haven't really studied the game, this book will boost your skill markedly, and with minimal effort. And even the more experienced player will find plenty of rewarding material in its many superbly chosen and annotated illustrative games taken from international grandmaster play.
Edward Lasker is the product of an earlier time, and yet his style and method are hardly dated. There are perhaps a few who may disagree with this opinion, and for them there are always the "dummy" books. But for the rest of us, there is Edward Lasker's "Chess Strategy", a book worthy of a place on every chess player's shelf.

FIVE STARS FOR PAPERBACK - KINDLE: um...

The Kindle Edition makes the book half as useful by failing to present sheet music excerpts clearly. They are the very subject of the book, and they cannot be read.

I have treasured this volume over all others on the subject, but I wanted it on Kindle so I wouldn't tear my third copy to pieces as I did the first two. I can't really use it in Kindle edition, although the lilt of Wilder's prose certainly seems to survive the transition.

What Makes A Good Song?

"American Popular Song" is a "technical" review of most of the known songwriters of this period and their songs. Alec Wilder himself is a part of this group. I say "technical" because all of the songs that are considered are broken down as to their form, their harmonic attributes, and what makes the subject song worthy of note.
Because of the "technical" aspect I believe this book would attract serious lovers of music of this period who want to delve deeper into "What makes a particular song a "hit" and why.
