Best overall text

I had the first edition of this book as a student and used it my first years teaching inorganic chemistry before I tried other books. The reason I left this text to try others is that there is just so much information here and not the best organization for the order in which I teach inorganic. However, that being said, I am now returning to this classic from Cotton, Wilkinson & Gaus. The main reason being I had fewer student complaints about the text when I used this book vs. the others. As other reviewers mentioned, the text is encyclopedic! And you end up jumping around to find what you want; however, Cotton et al. has the most complete volume for the undergraduate & beginning graduate course, so that you can pick & choose what you want to cover without much problem. For those with a descriptive bent, there are many descriptive chemistry chapters. For others who have a bit more physical inorganic bent, there is good coverage of those topics. I've used texts on both ends of the spectrum, and I found they only pleased a small portion of the students, while others struggled. This book has everything you want in a beginning course, and more (!) while being flexible enough that you can design your own course by picking chapters to cover. Finally, for the student, it is an excellent reference to keep for the future.

Great text for introductory inorganic chemistry textbooks

This textbook is written in an easy to follow matter unlike other inorganic textbooks in the market that is harder to understand.It gives good examples for an introductory course especially for first year University students.The only downside is that, advanced concepts are not or insufficiently discussed.But in the Advanced Inorganic Chemistry textbook by the same author,these concepts are discussed in more depth. I would recommend that any student who is interesed in inorganic chemistry should get both the basic inorganic and advanced inorganic textbooks .With these two books you should have no problem understanding the wide topic of inorganic chemistry.By using an introductory and an advanced text, the student is slowly introduced to the topic.Instead of being thrown headon into reading and understanding a single inorganic chemistry book

Good Reference and well written, BUT....

Presents a good overview on most of the elements. The basic edition is realy the same as the Advanced edition but with some of the Transition Metal stuff tossed out... I wouldn't buy the Adv. Edition, unless the school was shoving it down my throat... Not that this is bad, but I think that there are WAY WAY WAY better books on the subject of Trz. Complexes and Mechanisms (Spessard comes to mind in the fantastic "Organometallic Chemistry"). It is undeniable that FA Cotton can really write well and that the man is a genius on the subject, hell the guy lived through the glory years of Inorganic, but the book never really shows people what really happens mechanistically in the book... Everything is presented in an encyclopedic fashion, which sometimes makes things ambiguous... I think that this is a landmark of a book, but one that is really a first reference on a particular subject...

Excellent, plain English explanation of the various mortgages and how to choose one that best fits your situation. Also details how to shop and negotiate the best deal...with all the hype about shopping on the internet, that excellent chapter alone is worth the price of the book. I learned a lot about "creative financing" techniques like 80-10-10 loans that I knew nothing about before picking up a book. I've tried other mortgage books and found them to be dull and not to the point. This book was a joy to read and left me thinking clearly!

My only small complaint is the same as the reviewer's below: several times the authors refer to appendices that are not there! There are also some typos ("suprised") some in prominent places -- it just gave me the feeling that the book was rushed. One piece of information I felt they could have spent more time on was the mechanical side of paying down a 30 mortgage faster. For example, how many years does it take off your loan to put in one extra payment a year, or $100 per month, etc.... Home buyers often pick a 30 year mortgage because of the low monthly payment, but can strive to put in an extra payment a year to save tens of thousands of dollars of interest. This information would have given more details to the types of mortgages most people get. The authors spent a bit too much time by comparison on some relatively rare loans (reverse mortgages) although no one will put a gun to your head and make you read those parts. Overall, it was easy to follow and the best of the books on understanding how mortgages work and how to compare them.

For example, some insight into the behaviour of the currency, the rand, is clearly critical in terms of any investment in this market, as well as in providing some understanding of other volatile emerging market currencies, and also because it is often treated as the most liquid proxy for these currencies, particularly during upheavals. An excellent book for everyone who wants to deep in the knowledge regarding finances with special focus on an african market

Some months ago I received this book in a kindle format as a gift directly from author. I have read this book almost from cover to cover and I can say this book is really an excellent contribution to the financial literature because it is able to put together the basic financial theory with some modern ideas in an elegant way. In the first six chapters you will find some important concepts like returns, yield curve, the statistical concept regarding mean reversion process and other advanced mathematical terms like valuation models. However, in my particular viewpoint, the most interesting parts of this book are part 3 and 4 where you will find out an excellent (really wonderful) study in regard to a specific area I am working, I mean, investor behavior and a particular application of econophysics theory to study bubbles and financial crashes. If you want to be sure that this book will be an excellent adquisition to your personal library, you should analyze that Professor Didier Sornette who is probably one of the best experts in the econophysics area, has analyzed and commented the part of the book regarding financial crashes and complexity.
Finally, without the slightest doubt, the african market is almost unknown, at least in countries like mine, then you can learn a lot about those markets and of course you could have a lot of original ideas.

This collection of interviews doesn't really give a overall view of the war. It does give the view from a very personal perspective. The interviews range from the grunt in the field, to nurses, to higher commands. I got the feeling the histories given reflected what the experience did to the interviewees afterword more than during the experience. It sounded like it would be something you heard in a Vietnam support group. Nonetheless, interesting reading.

Personal - Very Real

This book makes you feel you are sitting with each veteran as they recall situations they experienced during the war. I love the fact that the grammar was basically kept "as narrated", instead of polishing and sugar-coating what they actually said. I really appreciate the openness of each veteran in this book, and sometimes even felt their pain/confusion - at least to some degree. I would recommend to anyone that wants to learn more of the reality of war-time experiences. Very good.

Very Unique Summation of Vietnam

This book takes a very unique approach to narrating the history of the Vietnam war. It allows individuals to tell their stories of their experience, but does so in chronilogical order. So what you get first is a story about welcoming Americans to the war i.e. getting off the plane to see a corpse fall out of the bag...welcome to nam and what you get last is a get out of Saigon before it falls story. The stories are varied, covering special ops and grunt units to hospital and airforce views. Some stories are very short while some linger on, but all of them have heart and truly show a side not usually seen with the battle histories.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and believe anyone with any interest in America's involvement in Vietnam would also. It is very cheap and is a quick read and will improve your knowledge of history...all three great qualities!

Super informative, covered most items I would attempt at home

I dropped my bike on a highway skid after my brakes locked up and this books helped me bring the bike back into shape. Covers most aspects of the body, engine and auxiliaries with plenty of pictures to show you exactly what to do. Buy this if you want to work on the YZF600R at home, or just want to know more about the bike.

Excellent Book for Weekend Repairs

I was tired of going to the shop any time my YZF needed service and paying $60/hr. I decided I would try this book. It fits the bill for the weekend mechanic. Instead of taking a new exhaust system I purchased to the shop I simply used the books guidance which was spot on. So, in essense the book has already paid for itself.
