Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis is a companion volume to the highly regarded Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis by Knut Syds�ter and Peter Hammond. The new book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate economics students whose requirements go beyond the material usually taught in undergraduate mathematics courses for economists. It presents most of the mathematical tools that are required for advanced courses in economic theory � both micro and macro.

This second volume has the same qualities that made the previous volume so successful. These include mathematical reliability, an appropriate balance between mathematics and economic examples, an engaging writing style, and as much mathematical rigour as possible while avoiding unnecessary complications. Like the earlier book, each major section includes worked examples, as well as problems that range in difficulty from quite easy to more challenging. Suggested solutions to odd-numbered problems are provided.

elementary matrix algebra, multivariable calculus, and static optimization.

Knut Syds�ter, Atle Seierstad,� and Arne Str�m all have extensive experience in teaching mathematics for economists in the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo. With Peter Berck at Berkeley, Knut Syds�ter and Arne Str�m have written a widely used formula book, Economists� Mathematical Manual (Springer, 2000). The 1987 North-Holland book Optimal Control Theory for Economists by Atle Seierstad and Knut Syds�ter is still a standard reference in the field.

About the Author

Peter Hammond is currently the Marie Curie Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick and Emeritus Professor at Stanford University. His many publications extend over several different fields of economics.

Knut Sydsaeter, Atle Seistan and Arne Strom all have extensive experience in teaching mathematics for economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo.

Another fabulous book by Cat Schield...

Royal Heirs Required is Cat Schield’s contribution to Harlequin Desire’s Billionaires and Babes series. From the moment I started the book, I was fully engaged in the story line. Yes, the premise is one that I’ve read over and over again but the way Ms. Schield told the story I felt as though it was the first time reading a story of an arranged marriage. Prince Gabriel Alessandro is the crown prince of Sherdana. He is expected to marry and carry on the royal lineage. Lady Olivia Darby is the daughter of a British Earl whose mother died during her childbirth. She was the perfect daughter who never got into trouble and one who knew how to hide her emotions well. Gabriel is surprised when he is informed he has twin girls from a previous girlfriend who has died and left them in his care. Olivia immediately is drawn to the twins. Slowly, Gabriel and Olivia start to forge a relationship. Then out of the blue, royal secrets are being leaked to the media. In fact one, dealing with Olivia, ends up having dire consequences. Can Gabriel and Olivia weave their way through the exposed secrets and find a happily ever after? Royal Heirs Required was a heartwarming story of two people finding love the hard way. They don’t let the past or secrets keep them from finding what their hearts desire. I have to say that I think this is the best book that I’ve read out of the Desire line in quite a while. I highly recommend Royal Heirs Required. I’d like to disclose that I received a copy of Royal Heirs Required in exchange for a fair and honest review.

An honest and lovely journey

My Thoughts:

Now this is a story! I loved seeing a story with unexpected twists in it, not only what's mentioned in the synopsis, but also throughout the book itself.

Gabriel chooses Olivia to become his bride and provide him with an heir. Their chemistry is apparent and everything seems to be going well. Then he finds out about his twin daughters and it could easily create a problem, but Olivia is amazing and accepts them without hesitation. Gabriel and Olivia have something happening between them that's blossoming into more than either of them expected going into this union. However, Olivia's secret could be the one turning point that could derail everything. Is it possible for them to move past it? Can what they feel for each other mean more than anything else?

Royal Heirs Required was a typical yet unexpected love story. Despite the speedbumps, you can feel the possibility of love leap off the page for Olivia and Gabriel. It was an honest and lovely journey. I really enjoyed this book by Cat Shield and would love to see what else she has to offer.

I liked this story even though a couple of things bothered me at the beginning of the story. The first one is that an arranged marriage involving royalty would be a situation that the intended bride would go through medical tests before the engagement was announced to insure that heirs could be provided. The other thing is Prince Gabriel finds out that he has twins by a former lover. It seems to me that the king and or royal family could change the laws and allow the oldest twin to inherit the throne in the future. Also, I wonder if Olivia would have contacted Gabriel if she had not received the news that a surrogacy pregnancy could be in their future.
In spite of those reservations, I really liked the twist of this story. Olivia was a strong, smart woman who was marrying into the royal family to help her dad with his business. Prince Gabriel was the oldest of the triplets so his life was devoted to the crown. He had a four year affair with Marisa, the twins mother, but knew that he could never marry her. Marisa dies and a lawyer arrives to deliver the twins to their father, Gabriel. Olivia hears the cries of the twins and discovers them with their nanny, who is not a nice person. Olivia takes care of the twins and Gabriel realizes that Olivia accepts his children and is willing to be a stepmother to them. Certain events occur that causes Gabriel and Olivia to reevaluate their situation and their lives together.

Brilliant! A must read for all freethinkers!

Mr. Condell, he of internet Youtube fame, has managed to write one of the best refutations of organized religion and theistic ideology this side of Bertrand Russell. Using concise logic, wit, and basic common sense, the author systematically shreds the idiocy that is organized religion and the sham that is the big three monotheistic faiths. Further, Mr. Condell illustrates the dangers imposed by the moral nonsense of such religious beliefs; from the christian fundies trying to impose their twisted morality on political discourse to the Muslims who would seek to use their religion to endorse violence against "infidels". This no-holds-barred, politically incorrect approach to the freethinker movement is a refreshing change of scenery from the typical psuedo-intellectual approach of some freethinkers (who shall remain nameless) who would seek to understand religion rather than rightly condemn it. A noble effort and a job well done, Mr. Condell!

Intelligent Articulation of Opposing Viewpoint

As I write this, I must state that I come from a different viewpoint and background than Pat Condell does. I am a pastor's son from the USA. However, I find that looking into the insights of those who believe differently than me can make me grow. And I must say that Condell has made me think.

I have watched the videos on YouTube now for a while, and while I do not agree on perhaps half of his opinions, I can see where he is coming from, and it has broadened my worldview. The reason I gave one star off on this was because I found Condell's tone too hostile at times, but I would assume that this tone is to be expected when one is discussing the subjects that Condell discusses. Overall, the work is extensive philosophical and socio-economic thought given in a sometimes amusing, always accesible manner.

As a closing, I would recommend this book, as well as Condell's YouTube videos, for the sole purpose of learning a view that may or may not be the same as yours.

A scholarly, well-written biography of France's great heroine, Beyond the Myth is thorough, interesting, and full of detail about this remarkable woman and the time in which she lived. In addition to an historical introduction, Brooks also discusses various interpretations of Joan's visions, and then makes her own thoughtful analysis. The book also contains a comprehensive, annotated bibliography. The black-and-white illustrations have been carefully selected and are aptly placed within the text; there are also two excellent maps. Brooks' book is a good complement to Williams' classic Joan of Arc (American Heritage, 1963; o.p.) which, while more condensed in its text, effectively relates Joan's story and has superb full-color illustrations. A more recent study, Banfield's Joan of Arc (Chelsea, 1985; o.p.), is skimpy in detail and contains many factual errors; its numerous illustrations are, for the most part, poorly selected and explained. Goodwin's Where the Towers Pierce the Sky (Four Winds, 1989), a recent time-travel fantasy, treats Joan in the simplistic manner typical of popular fiction. In contrast, Brooks writes for serious readers, and her book, although challenging, is richly rewarding. It will certainly become the definitive Joan of Arc biography for young adults. --Ann W. We Loved It

This was a read aloud book with my 8 and 10 year old children. I chose to read this book because we all loved Ms. Brooks's biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Before reading the book we thought of Joan as just a peasant girl that lead an army. After reading the book, we know Joan was so much more. She was intelligent, confident, valorous, and brave. Her life was difficult and filled with challenges that tested her beliefs and patriotism. We appreciate knowing the motivations behind her actions, and her single aim of restoring King Charles to the throne of France. We all would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about Joan and her life.

Getting beyond the myths about Joan of Arc

In "Beyond the Myth: The Story of Joan of Arc," Polly Schoyer Brooks provides a biography for young adults that makes a point of separating historical facts from popular legends. One of the main strengths of the volume is how Brooks establishes the situation in 15th-century France which involved a king who suffered fits of madness and his weakling son and then tells the story of a peasant girl from the countryside who accomplished what appeared to be miracles in rallying the French to her banner. The result is a book about Joan of Arc that captures her humanity as well as her heroism.
Brooks neatly divides the story of Joan in half, with the first six chapters starting with Joan's life in the village of Domremy and ending with the crowing of Charles the Dauphin as King of France, and the last six depicting Joan's fall from glory, trial, and execution. Brooks emphasizes that the situations that brought about her martyrdom were beyond Joan's control and details the political calculations that ended up putting her in the hands of the English. However, as Brooks emphasizes, though the English burned Joan's body to ashes they could not wipe out the memory of her deeds from the French people. I appreciate that Brooks makes it clear to her readers how the effort's to restore Joan's name and honor after the English left France were just as politically motivated as the trial that condemned her.
This young adult biography is illustrated with historic prints and paintings, including a sketch by a clerk of his idea of Joan drawn in the margin of his report, as well as contemporary photographs of historic sites, such as Joan's stone-and-rubble house in Domremy and the statue on the post were she was burned at the stake in the marketplace at Rouen. Brooks has also written similar biographies of Eleanor of Acquitaine and Cleopatra. However, as Brooks notes, although more books about Joan have been inspired than any other women in history, she remains an enigma. In "Beyond the Myth," Brooks tries to answer the key questions concerning Joan's life and to restore her humanity, which in the final analysis, Brooks sees as being her greatest virtue. For students who are ready to get beyond your basic juvenile biographies of Joan of Arc, this is a thoughtful volume to which to turn next.
