About the Author

A lifelong Texan of many generations (my first confirmed ancestors arrived in Texas about 1820-24), I was born in Brown County in 1949.

My family was poor while I was growing up. I got my first real job when I was 11 years old working at a Corpus Christi marina for a dollar a day! That was 7 days a week when school was out, and it seemed like a ton of money to me. I also got tips from customers, which could more than double my salary at times.

I served a tour in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader with the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne Divisions. When I came home, I worked anywhere I could find a job until I taught myself how to weld and went into the construction industry as a pipe welder. I went to work at the Amoco Refinery in Texas City where I worked 34 years as a welder, supervisor, and apprentice coordinator before retiring in 2009.

I was asked to come out of retirement last year to develop a pipefitter and welder program for Alvin Community College where I remain today.

Timely Novel.

Distrust of politicians, constitutional violations, presidential abuse of executive powers, federal judge dictates, the failures of both political parties—The Fall of the Western Empire is a timely novel of a state and its peoples’ growing frustration with the U.S. government. Marty Kert rises from the dust of a West Texas ranch to walk the hallowed halls of the Texas capital as governor. Under the mentorship of a political matriarch, Mrs. Travis, Kert takes on a president who believes himself to be above the law. And while battling the federal government, Kert is confronted with assassination attempts on his life. Secession and freedom from a failing federal political system is the prize, and the outcome—well, sorry, but no spoilers here…

I gave it four stars because the novel is primarily narrative driven yet Mr. Tyson’s debut novel displays a sound knowledge of the Constitution, today’s existing thoughts, emotions, and political problems. The storyline is solid, it’s an easy read, and the inclusion of Mrs. Travis as a key powerbroker, to me, drove the story. It may be narrative driven, but once you settle into the novel, you set that aside. For the ardent constitutionalist, believers in freedom, and the people of the Great State of Texas, this could be a worthy read for the thoughts it evokes.

I feel Mr. Tyson is an upcoming novelist you may want monitor for future works.

Terrific, Twisting Texas Tale!

This was an excellent read with issues as timely as tomorrow's newspaper, a plot that will continue to surprise you as you are drawn at a fast pace through its twists and turns. I couldn't put it down and read it in a single afternoon. Every red-blooded, patriotic Texan needs this in their library and every freedom loving American will love it too.

Great read for all Patriots wanting to return to the Constitution.

Marvin Tyson did a great job portraying the need for change in our nation and states. He hits the nail on the head showing us the way to accomplish these needs. He also shows the love of Texians for our Republic and our freedoms. If you liked Patriots of Treason and State of Treason, you will love this book. Exciting and compelling.

Poor HVAC book

I highly recommend NOT purchasing this book. Unfortunately it was required by one of my classes. My teacher for the HVAC class I was taking was a poor teacher at best (an adjunct professor with no teaching or presentation skills). anyway due to my teachers extremely inconvenient short comings I was forced to turn to the book to learn anything. The book however is also lacking. the text of the book is extremely dull and not always clear and to hard to follow when giving explanations. However my major issue with this book is the example problems they are weak and to simple to use as guides for the homework problems for each chapter. I think mot people learn through example, which this book does a horrible job doing. Simply, spend your money else where.

Excellent reference book

This is an excellent reference book. Like many other engineering subjects, it's not necessarily something one can teach themselves just by reading it and working example problems. This is partly because there are often several methods for calculating heat loss, heat gain, etc., some of which work better than others in some situations. This book may not stand on its own with respect to teaching the supporting (prerequisite) subjects; heat transfer, thermodynamics, etc. If you buy this book, be sure you get the CDROM that comes with it (mine didn't, and I had to work though getting it separately). The CDROM has "clean" pages of charts, graphs, etc., which one will likely find useful in practice (such as the psychrometric charts). The CDRM also has lots of other data that help students and practicing workers find reasonable values for different kinds of insulation weather patterns, etc. Another thing to keep in mind it that every few years, ASHRAE reviews/revises/updates their standards. Thus, some of the information in this particular edition of the book may not be applicable a few years from now. Also, there are some non-trivial typographical errors, some of which might be due to having to revise the contents on a regular basis.

BEWARE OF NEIGHBORS

I read this play several weeks ago and plan to see it in New York. A true and frightening cautionary tale when you open your hearts and share with new neighbors who are living on nothing. Very impressive writing and totally believable. Paints a painful picture of youth running on empty. First rate work.

a bad play about 4 sad/poor behaving adults

I'm not sure what the Pulitzer Prize committee saw in this play - it was a finalist in 2011 (the fabulous Clybourne Park won that year). It's a story that may or not be set in Detroit - the playwright's instructions say that it is outside of a major American city, in the first ring of the suburbs.

There are 4 major characters - two couples in their thirties. Both a little down and behind in the 21st century American economy. Sharon and Kenny are recently sober and have no money. They've recently moved into the neighborhood, and Ben and Mary invite them over for dinner. The play is entirely set in their two backyards, which are next to each other.

All of the characters have struggles, desires and sad tales (but none that are super sad). None of them are admirable nor deserving of sympathy. As the play progresses, all the characters act badly in some form. It's not entertaining. It is also over the top at times and overly drawn out.

Better seen than read. The words need actors to give them weight, air, and fluidity. It is especially difficult to visualize many of the scenes taking place, as D'Amour is sparing in her stage direction: for most directors, a gift, but for recreational readers, this can be a tough one to tackle. Don't reach into this play without prior experience reading theatrical literature. You'll enjoy it more.

A deliberately post-deconstructionist manifesto against the dangers of incommensurability, Detienne argues for and engages in the constructive comparison of societies of a great temporal and spatial diversity. The result testifies to what new and illuminating insights his comparatist method can produce.

About the Author
Bob Garrett�is a Visiting Scholar at California Polytechnic State�University, San Luis Obispo. He was Professor of Psychology at�DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and held several�positions there, including Chairperson of the Department of�Psychology, Faculty Development Coordinator, and Interim Dean�of Academic Affairs. He received his BA from the University of�Texas at Arlington and his MA and PhD from Baylor University.�He received further training in the Department of Physiology at�Baylor University College of Medicine and at the Aeromedical�Research Primate Laboratory, Holloman Air Force Base. Bob and�his wife, Duejean, live on a 3,200-acre ranch they share with 47�other families in the hills outside San Luis Obispo. Their two sons,�daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren all live nearby.
