Family, Love, and God's Plan

It's Christmas. The Sanders clan is gathering in Hope Springs. The festivities are dampened by the sudden death of Pastor Jim Dillon. He and Grandma Geri, matriarch of the clan, have lived next door to each other for many years so both families are caught up in the funeral preparations. The two families, one, the Dillons, white, the Sanders, black, are very supportive of each other in an atmosphere where whites and black tend to keep to themselves.

People from both families arrive with issues. Todd Dillon and is wife Becca, are mourning his father, but she is also caught up in the excitement of her expanding ministry. Stephanie Sanders arrives unwilling to spend Christmas getting to know this branch of her family. She doesn't want to serve, but perhaps the is God's plan for her. Janelle and her children arrive still mourning the death of her husband, David. These and many other characters from the family and the little town of Hope Springs make this a delightful book.

The message is strongly Christian. The characters all at some point seriously pray to God to guide them in finding the plan for their lives. I found the coupling of the strong Christian message with the modern characters, each with issues, very satisfying.

I highly recommend this book. The characters are appealing; the plot, full of romantic twists, and the emphasis on God's plan for our lives, instructive.

Great addition to the series

I've read the other books in the series and thus was familiar with many of the characters and reading this book "Hope Springs" reaffirmed my love for author Kim Cash Tate.

In this book, a relatively recently widowed Janelle goes 'home' to spend time with her grandmother who is seriously ill. Because life back home is filled with sadness and memories of her late husband, she decides to uproot her kids and spend some time taking care of her grandmother. She encounters her first love whose wife has left him as a single father and old feelings are soon at the surface...

Janelle's cousin Stephanie, who has a history of selfishness from the prior two novels, is feeling the prompting of God to also assist with their grandmother, her husband will be away on a medical mission for weeks and she asked to me made more of a servant, so how can she say no...

Finally, Becca is the wife of the grandmother's neighbor's son. When her father-in-law who was the pastor of the local church passes away suddenly, Becca's husband feels call to move from St. Louis to the small town of Hope Springs to pastor his late father's church. Becca is torn as her career as an inspirational speaker and author is just taking off and Hope Springs is not what she saw as a home base.

This novel tells the stories of these three women, who have separate and overlapping stories of their struggles to move forward in the paths that God has laid forth. The characters, as always for author Kim Cash Tate, are well developed, engaging and the stories are great from start to finish.

I savored each and every page and am again eagerly awaiting the next story from this gifted author.

Engaging Christian Fiction

Janelle Evans lost her husband and she also pulled away from her relationship with God. When she and her children visit Hope Springs for a family reunion, she finds a reason to stay longer than she'd intended. Will the time she spends with family and an old friend help her to live again?

Becca Anderson is finally living her dream. She has been invited to speak at The National Christian Women's Conference, and maybe even greater things will follow. Her husband has been called to Pastor his late father's church in Hope Springs, which means relocation to a small town. How will the move affect her dream, her marriage, and her walk with the Lord?

Stephanie London is happily married and living in St. Louis. A visit to Hope Springs reunites her with family she hasn't seen in years, and it also teaches her a few things about herself.

The first thing I thought as I began to read was that it would have been nice if this book had not been released until December or maybe even November, around Thanksgiving. Since it's Christmas when the story begins, reading it during the Christmas season would have made for a even cozier reading experience. Yes, I could have waited, but I had read Faithful, and I was reading Cherished when I bought Hope Springs, so - since I really enjoyed the first two books - I was eager to read more of Tate's work.

Predominately white churches, predominately black churches - Tate brings attention to the division among believers, teaching a lesson Christians will benefit from. There are also messages about how harmful family secrets can be, putting someone's needs before your own, learning how to hear from God, family unity and forgiveness.

Some of Tate's fictional characters from Faithful and Cherished are in this book, but the story mostly revolves around new characters. There are quite a few of them to keep track of - I had to go back a few sentences every now and then to make sure I had things straight, but Hope Springs was as inspirational, engaging and thought-provoking as Tate's previous novels.

A qualified "thumbs up"

This is a tough call, but on the whole I am giving this novel 4 stars because it successfully held my attention, got me engaged in trying to understand the characters' motives and is beautifully written. Having said that, I want to acknowledge that many of the criticisms leveled here by other Amazon reviewers do have merit, primarily the charge that Updike's characters are often stereotypical. Of interest to me is that, while many reviewers complained about the stereotypes of fat wives, Arab-Americans and single mothers, I didn't notice any comments on the characters of African-American school girl Joryleen and her boyfriend, who is named "Tylenol," of all things. But in any case, since the stereotype issues have been well covered by other reviewers, I'm going to let that go and focus on what I see as the positives of this novel, and there really are quite a few.

For one thing, I like the fact that Updike chose this very difficult topic to write about and also made obvious efforts to understand aspects of Islamic-American culture that are doubtless utterly foreign to him. An author of his standing could just coast for the rest of his career, but this writer chose to stretch himself and try to get inside the mind of a character that represents a far more complex America than that of Rabbit, for example. This is an America that we had all better take a shot at understanding, since this is the one we are living in today, and will have to go on living in for some time to come. Believers in Islam are here and they are becoming an ever more important force in the polyglot US -- AND it is pretty clear that many of these folks are severely disaffected from the mainstream culture. *If* this alienation tends to encourage violent actions, then those of us who are of the so-called "majority" culture had better spend some time trying to understand why that is, and think about how we can help these new US residents succeed here. (That's a big IF, since it seems perfectly plausible to me that cultural alienation does not lead to "homegrown" terrorism at all. But for the purposes of this review, I am assuming that it could.)

Another positive of this novel is that it is beautifully written and highly evocative of place. The place happens to be a depressingly urbanized New Jersey, so it's easy to miss the power of Updike's descriptions, but consider this passage: "...the sky cloudless but for a puffy far scatter over Long Island, the ozone at the zenith so intense it seems a smooth-walled pit of blue fire, the accumulated towers of lower Manhattan a single gleaming mass, speedboats purring and sailboats tilting in the bay, the cries and conversation of the tourist crowd making a dapple of harmless sound around them. 'This beauty,' Ahmad thinks 'must mean something -- a hint from Allah, a foreshadow of Paradise.'

As for the criticism that Updike is anti-American and using the character of Ahmad to voice his own complaints, I counter by saying that it's important for us Americans to be more self-reflective than we may find comfortable, and that Updike is contributing something useful by raising important moral and ethical challenges to our behavior as a nation in the world. Take for example this line from pp. 198-9 of the novel: "[True adherents] believe that a billion followers of Islam need not have their eyes and ears and souls corrupted by the poisonous entertainments of Hollywood and a ruthless economic imperialism whose Christian-Jewish God is a decrepit idol, a mere mask concealing the despair of atheists."

Granted, that is powerful stuff and certainly discomfiting. But if one reads any of the world's press at all, it is pretty clear that this is the image that many people have of America, and the challenge Updike's characters are presenting in this novel seem to me to be worth considering. What sort of response shall we give to a comment like the above? How observant of our religious principles are the majority of us here in the US, and what about the economic fallout of our national trade and security policies? I am not saying that I agree with the assessments of the characters in this novel, nor do I necessarily think we should assume Updike does. But it is a view that we might at least consider if we hope to come to peaceable terms with the billions of Muslims who are solid citizens of this and the world's other nations, and who have no hostile intentions.

So, for me, the bottom line on Terrorist is that it's an important book that raises difficult questions that ought to be given some serious thought. We should be glad that Updike chose to write it.

Terrorist is the final novel of John Updike and could have been written today as it deals with contemporary issues such as broken families, school bullies, the gap between reality and idealism and one young man's mission. I highly recommend it.

Compelling

John Updike is back, and is again surprising his loyal readers. This time he engages with a powerful fiction that deals with themes of terrorism, religious fundamentalism, and the search for meaning.

Terrorist is the story of Ahmad Ashmawy Malloy, a seventeen-year-old child of an Irish-American mother and an Egyptian father who abandoned the family before Ahmad could form memories of him. When Ahmad turned eleven, he began pursuing his paternal heritage and converted to Islam. For Ahmad, Central High is as sea of temptation--gangs, drugs, and sexual openness; devils which attempt to lure him off the Straight Path.

Terrorist is also the story of Jack Levy, a depressed, nearly retired guidance counselor at Central High. Jack is a secular Jew, raised by a father who favored the promises of capitalism over the ancient covenant between God and his people. And now at the twilight of his career, Jack is overwhelmed by the purposelessness of his life. Instead of becoming a comic writer for Jackie Gleeson, Jack is trapped as a guidance counselor in a dilapidated school, serving teens who aren't interested in his advice.

Jack's responsibilities as guidance counselor entangles is purposeless life with the religious fervor of the soon-to-graduate Ahmad. Conflict mounts as Ahmad falls in with a newly immigrated Lebanese family and their jihad; while Jack grasps for significance in an extra-marital affair.

Terrorist is a tightly written thriller. Updike is known for his literary craftsmanship and he doesn't disappoint in his latest offering. I found myself pausing and rereading many of his descriptive passages out of utter enjoyment. Updike plunges the reader into the mind of a youthful, na�ve zealot and an aging cynic, all the while driving the plot forward with determined suspense. Updike keeps the reader in a state of fright right through the closing moments of the book.

Terrorist is about the search for meaning; Updike's rich characters pursue significance through religion, sex, materialism, and intellectual conceit. And every character is confronted with the realization that their bait is not catching fulfillment.

If there's a flaw to be found with Terrorist, it's that Updike traffics in stereotypes, only some of which are fair. Ahmed's propensity toward extremism is born out of growing up fatherless in blighted New Prospect. Jack is a humanist who bears the weight of knowing there is no God. Through his wife, Beth, Baptists are painted as fundamentalist cousins, separated only by degrees of violence.
Yet Updike brings these typecasts to life like a master marionette operator and the reader forgets the woodenness of the stereotype. He does with unflinching relational realism; and so a caution: strong language and a few bedroom scenes populate the book.

I strongly recommend Terrorist. It's relevant to today's headlines and I expect that its craftsmanship will keep this novel poignant for decades to come. The discerning reader will not only be entertained by the life and death drama, but challenged by the questions of meaning and belief.

Solay comes to court to plea for funds for her now impoverished mother, and while there she uses her skills in astrology and tells Richard's fortune. Through one twist of fate or another she ends up hooking up with lawyer Justin Lamont, who works for the Council of Lords Appellant investigating Richard. The King orders Justin to marry Solay with the idea to have her spy for him, but Justin insists he'll only marry for love and Solay must prove it.

Or something like that, I confess to feeling a bit lost at times. In the end it was an OK love story with a much too heavy dose of Big Misunderstandings. I really didn't care for either Solay or Justin (a bad thing in a romance) and didn't find much chemistry between the two either, and some of the prose was rather silly at times:

"Her breath quickened as a plume of desire slithered up from her centre. She squeezed her thighs against the weakness, waiting for his touch...Men were all helpless that way, led by their staffs to drink at a woman's well, else how would a woman live?"

"Her breath and her body were one. There was inside and no outside, no difference between his skin and hers. No up or down. No earth or sky. Just this swirling oneness, dizzying as the fall of snowflakes."

If you're looking for a light easy read heavier on the romance than the history this might suit to kill a few hours, but don't go out of your way hunting it down either.

Lady Joan of Weston, also known as Solay, is the considered the lowest of the low, punished for her mother's sin of courting the late king. Now Solay must see the ruling king in hopes of aid. The courts and Parliament have stripped her mother of nearly everything. If something doesn't change, Solay, her mother, and her younger sister will starve.

Lord Justin Lamont believes in the letter of the law. A lawyer and member of the Council that is to oversee young King Richard's monetary decisions, Justin has the unfortunate task of interacting with the impetuous monarch. When Solay arrives at Windsor to seek money, Justin vows to stand in her way. Her mother wronged the kingdom and deserves whatever hardship the family must face. From what he can tell, Solay has been sent to seduce her way into a comfortable purse, just like her mother. He won't let that happen.

When Solay and Justin are betrothed to each other to serve someone's nefarious purposes, both must reexamine their lives and expectations, for everything is about to change.

Medieval romance is a genre that requires a great deal of research by authors who take on the challenge. Setting, way of life, customs, even what people wore and ate during the era help place readers in the story. Even then, to pull readers the rest of the way in, the author must create a compelling tale. Gifford succeeds at both in THE HARLOT'S DAUGHTER. Solay and Justin are very human; each character is strong, yet deliciously flawed. To a modern woman, Solay's focus on finding a man to help support her family may seem archaic, but for the time period, it is quite appropriate. Lest the "modern" woman despair, however, this attitude is something that is exposed and addressed quite nicely throughout.

This book is easy to read, and the story is compelling. Political intrigue, a tumultuous betrothal, desperation, and hope weave this tale of love and acceptance into a historical romance that will catch readers' hearts. Blythe Gifford knows how to touch that essential something in us all.

A good story

Based on historical events, this book is a quick and interesting read filled with intrigue, politics and romance. It does not disappoint for action.

Joan, or Solay as she is called, is the daughter of the ex-King and his mistress, or so she thinks. After the King is deposed and another takes her place, she moves with her mother and younger sister to the countryside, basically in exile from the populace. Running low on funds, her mother sends her to court to beg favor from the King that he might give them money annually. The King, meanwhile, answers to Parliament, and is not exactly in charge of the treasury. Solay goes to court, among snickers and rumors of her heritage, and cajoles and lies her way into the King's favor.

When things are looking in her favor, Justin, the lawyer steps in.

Justin is sick and tired of people and their games and lies. Of course, he has his own, but that is different. Working with Parliament to stop a corrupt King is wearing him out. When he notices Solay attempting to get money from the King, he steps in to figure out what is going on, and let her know she will not get a cent without Parliament's approval. Solay does everything within her power to gain his favor, but he sees right through her tricks.

In the background of the story is a power-hungry party King and his cronies, married men having affairs, and a Pope annulling his marriage for some reason never given. There is a little sister who wants to be a man, a power-hungry abd loveless mother, and a dead wife.

There is also a power hungry Parliament and clerks, terrified judges, and at the very center of the storm, two people whom say they love each other, but don't even know themselves.

Each character in this book hoard secrets and lies like a candy stash. Though the characters are believable, none are likeable. I spent the entire book trying to figure out who were the good guys and who were the bad ones. I wanted to root for someone to win, but in the end, I'm not sure which side won because both were good and bad.

Also, we don't find out enough about the charactgers and their personalities to either like or dislike them. Though the story ran smoothly, I felt let down. It was extremely impersonal.

Much different in ways than the movie

Mulligans is a film I really enjoy, and Charlie David is an actor whose work I really enjoy. When I realized he was an author as well, I wasn't sure what to expect. The book was better than the film, although with all due respect it usually is. But what makes this book better is that it goes deeper; there were several omens in the film where I went "there's something more going on here", and the book confirmed several of my suspicions.

Charlie David wrote the screenplay for Mulligans, which was released as a film in 2008. David also starred in Mulligans, and served as an executive producer. Following the success of the film, he expanded the screenplay into a novel. Having seen this excellent film when it was first released (yet acknowledging the nuances had grown hazy in my memory), I jumped at the opportunity to read and review this second edition of the book.

My eagerness was rewarded with a beautifully written story. As the title suggests, it is a story of self-discovery, fragile truths, and potential new beginnings. Mulligans is not a romance, yet ultimately it is a love story — a masterfully woven depiction of love of family, love of friends, love of self.

This story is equal parts charming, uncomfortable, and enlightening. The focus is on choices, reactions, and consequences. Some we see on page, some we do not. I’ll state up front that the ending is rather bittersweet. However, the payoff is a bright infusion of hope and newfound strength.

*This review is going to contain spoilers, no way around it.

Chase and Tyler are both 20 year old college roommates. Fairly opposite personalities and backgrounds did not prevent them from becoming best friends. Tyler invites Chase to spend the summer at his family’s lake house. Spending time with Tyler and his family sounded like a dream come true to Chase. Little did he know that his upcoming, impromptu coming out was about to become the driving force of cataclysmic change in so many lives, including his own.

This story belongs primarily to Nathan and his wife Stacey. They are Tyler’s parents. The author does a superb job allowing the reader to visit their pasts through present interactions. Regrets and current despair are apparent. Nathan has a solid career and is devoted to his family, yet he has a little sense of self. He enjoys playing golf and tinkering with cars, but these are an escape from his reality more than the pursuit of his dreams. Being that he and Stacey became parents at the age of 16, he had never explored his attraction to men. At 36, he is feeling restless, unfulfilled and disenchanted. It was obvious that Nathan did not feel close to his wife. Chase appeared in Nathan’s life at a moment in time when both men were vulnerable. Given the dynamics we learn about in the story, I was sympathetic to Nathan.

Chase is extremely likeable. He comes across as well adjusted – if a bit sheltered — despite a hard knock childhood which included losing his dad, and having an emotionally absent mom. He’s also an aspiring artist and is eager to have an inspiring location to paint. Chase is gay, but he has yet to tell anybody about it. He has yet to act on it. Unlike Tyler, he is not at all experienced sexually. He has grown very close to Tyler, can’t imagine coming out to him, yet one day he chooses to do so. In the meantime, Chase meets Jarod at the lake, another young man who is not out. Chase feels elated when his sexual urges are kindled with Jarod, who seems so nice. Jarod bails when Chase needs him most, leaving Chase bewildered and angry. Afterward, when Chase finds he is alone with Nathan, they experience a heightened awareness of one another, which leads to sex and self- awakening. The reader is shown the spark, the hesitation, the eventual succumbing to attraction. Any actual sex is off page. The sex serves to open the eyes of the characters to bigger truths.

Stacey chose to make her family her entire life and has little sense of self outside of it. She is not unaware of Nathan’s truth, yet she’s done nothing proactive, nothing to help him, or their family, deal with it. She continues to wear a happy face and construct the fa�ade of a “perfect” life until it inevitably disintegrates in front of her. When Nathan and Chase come together, Stacey’s initial reaction to this development seems unfair in light of the long history of emotional distance she has with Nathan. She came across as selfish, where as to me, Nathan did not.

To be fair, both Nathan and Stacey could have broached the elephant in the room sooner. Perhaps Nathan would have eventually, were it not for Chase. Chase naively, yet genuinely believed he was helping Nathan through a rough time. Neither man set out to seduce, but the moment and their connection proved a revelation to each of them. Despite their age difference, they were both experiencing a once in a lifetime, life changing moment together.

The dominos start to fall. Stacey confronts Nathan. Tyler confronts Nathan and Chase. Chase is mortified — he doesn’t want to lose his best friend. Stacey doesn’t want to lose her constructed life. Nathan sees a new life path opening up. Birdy, Tyler’s ten year old sister, is caught up in the fallout, but ultimately proves wiser than the adults. Tyler’s summer girlfriend, as someone who was removed from the immediacy of the situation, ends up offering him a rational viewpoint and sound advice.

The aftermath of Nathan’s secret being out in the open reminded me of a blister being burst. The discomfort had been growing for a long time, but once brought to the surface, healing began. The ending is far from tied up in a bow, but it is full of promise for fresh starts. Nathan, Stacey and Chase – Tyler, Jarod and Birdy too — all faced roads to travel that they hadn’t been down before. I was deeply moved by the closing pages of this story — they are ripe with forgiveness, love, strength, anticipation, and hope.

The potential relationship break-downs people face when confronted with buried truths is not an easy dynamic to explore. There is the risk of clich�s, over dramatization, or having someone act completely out of character. David unspools his complex plot effortlessly, while genuinely exploring the actions and reactions of the characters. I was awestruck by the depth and flow of his gorgeous writing, via which his characters navigated some extremely trying situations. Much like Chase’s art, David’s words paint a brilliant, layered, raw, and powerful story.

Not to be missed. And now, I’m off to watch the film again.

Charlie David's Adaptation of His First Screenplay Delves Deeper into His Crafted World and the Characters that Reside There!

Having seen the talented Charlie David as a primary character in the guilty pleasure gay-themed supernatural soap drama 'Dante's Cove', and within other independent films, such as 'A Four Letter Word' and 'Kiss the Bride', amongst others, I was thrilled to see that he had turned his hand to writing and producing regarding his newest venture called 'Mulligans'. Charlie wrote the screenplay for this feature film, which centres around the theme of second chances using the golf-analogy of a mulligan, with interconnecting themes of family dynamics, brotherly friendship and the suppression of sexual orientation.
The film stars Charlie David as Chase and Derek James as Tyler Davidson, who are best friends spending the summer together at Tyler's parents' lakeside home. Whilst there, Chase decides to come out as gay to his best friend, and the Davidson family are thrust into a situation wherein they are forced to confront long-suppressed feelings of guilt and complacency. Tyler's mother, Stacie (portrayed by the brilliant Thea Gill of 'Queer as Folk' fame), is determined to be the perfect housewife and mother to both Tyler and youngest daughter Birdie, played by newcomer Grace Vukovic, who delivers her role splendidly with innocent questioning of the world around her. Stacie's husband and Tyler's father, Nathan (played by Dan Payne) seems to be more interested in his golfing hobby of late which is an annoyance to his wife, who suspects that that their marriage might be suffering due to a lack of communication. Events unfold between Nathan and Chase, with Nathan ultimately admitting hidden feelings that he has suppressed throughout his marriage.
Distributed in 2009 by Palari Books, this adaptation of the film's screenplay by Charlie David, attempts to explore more deeply the characters that he, himself, has crafted and presented to the viewers of 'Mulligans'. Inner thoughts are flushed out as the reader is shown how much Nathan is holding back regarding his feelings towards Chase and, likewise, Chase is portrayed in an empathetic and relatable manner, that guides the reader into understanding how the two characters become so emotionally and physically entangled. Stacie is shown to be a strong-willed woman, determined to keep her family together, and Tyler's jock-centric personality is as humorously presented as Derek James portrays in the movie. Also, plot elements that do not have such mention in the film are given much more prevalence here, such as the relationship between Chase and Jarod, which sets the mood for what is to come, and adds more intricate meaning to the production's main theme of being given second chances. Because the film portrays Jarod as a very minor character and as a background straight friend of Tyler's (although the deleted scenes within the DVD extras show this wasn't always the filmmaker's intention), it is interesting to explore an additional point-of-view that adds a deeper layer to the story of Chase's developing sexual and emotional maturity.

I love the meditations in this book.

A very comprehensive and detailed meditations. Most books have a whole heap of theory and very little visualisations. This book, as with all of Larry Moens' meditation books forego the theory and give you a full book of meditations. They are beautiful with so much imagery. It would be great if this book were available as a audio download though I can't find it. Well worth it if you're looking for a book that actually delivers what it says it's going to, that is a book full of meditations.
